Brian Vera Shocks Dzinziruk in Tenth, Retains WBO NABO

By:Robert Brizel, Real Combat Media Correspondent

Hunington, NY (January 26th, 2013)– In a shocking ending, Brian ‘The Warrior’ Vera finished off former World Light Middleweight champion Serhiy Dzinziruk, landing numerous head punches on Dzinziruk after trapping him in a corner, and sending the beaten challenger to the canvas. Dzinziruk’s legs were shot, and though he beat the count, referee Benji Estevez waved an end to the contest at 1:50 of the tenth round. Dzinziruk had no chance of making it out of the round or winning on the scorecards at that point.

The 12 round ESPN2 bout was held on the anniversary of 1973 Sundown Showdown between the late heavyweight champion Smokin’ Joe Frazier and George Foreman, Friday night January 25, 2013, at Turning Stone Resort Casino, Verona, New York. Vera, 23-6, with 14 knockouts, Austin, Texas, won the WBO NABO Middleweight title in August 2012 with a 12 round decision over Sergio Mora in San Antonio.

Vera decked Dzinziruk twice in the first round for a 10-7 round on the scorecards, and continued landing overhand right hands on the southpaw Dzinziruk in the second round, building a threepoint lead early. From that point on, Dzinziruk, now 37-2-1, 24 knockouts, a Ukrainian fighting out of Hamburg, Germany, fought at 160 pounds, heaviest of his career. After winning his first 37 bouts, Dzinziruk was stopped in the eighth round by Sergio Gabriel Martinez for the vacant WBC Diamond Middleweight title in March 2011, and drew with 15-0 Jonathan Gonzalez at Turning Stone Resort & Casino in September 2012. Dzinziruk’s last win wasa tenth round stoppage of Daniel Dawson to retain his WBO Light MIddleweight title in California in May 2010, nearly three years ago. It would appear Dzinziruk, who went down five times in his bout with Martinez, never recovered from that damage.

Dzinziruk appeared to win the third, fourth rounds and sixth rounds with singly placed jabs while guarding from Vera’s right hand and making him miss. Dzinziruk also landed the occasional left hook to the body of Vera, but could not shake Vera’s constant overhand right hands to the head thrown with evil intent. Ahead on the punch count, Vera won the fifth. The seventh and eighth rounds appeared even.

The bout broke open in the eighth round when Vera landed numerous right head shots on a tiring Dzinziruk and came close to stopping him, but Dzinziruk came back in the second half of the round and cut Vera on the corner of the left eye. Dzinziruk appeared to win the ninth round with carefully placed right hands which went after Vera’s eye cut. The bout was still on the table when Vera closed the show.

Dzinziruk would be better going back to light middleweight, and trying a bout with Alfredo Angulo, James Kirkland, Austin Trout, Saul Alvarez, Yuri Foreman, or somebody noteworthy in the 154 pound weight class. Vera fought the pathway to beat Dzinziruk at 160 pounds, leaving Dzinziruk with no future in the division.

Result: Brian Vera TKO 10 Serhiy Dzinziruk, Middleweights (1:50).

Referee: Benji Estevez. Vera retains the WBO NABO Middleweight title.
