Boxing Highlights of 2012

By Robert Brizel, Real Combat Media Correspondent

#1 Juan Manuel Marquez versus Manny Pacquiao IV

Marquez disposes of Pacquiao in the sixth round by knockout and shocks the whole world and everyone in it, except himself, as Pacquiao went headhunting for a knockout, fought recklessly and carelessly, would up out of foot position and was an easy target. The whole world tuned in and watched Pacquiao get finished live.

# 2 Violent Deaths of boxing champions Hector Camacho and Ernest M-16 Mateen

Macho Camacho was murdered with a friend in Puerto Rico while in the front seat of a car with Cocaine, while Mateen beat his wife over the head with the butt of a gun in Georgia and then got shot to death in the heart by her in self-defense. Pro Boxing cannot afford to take such publicized hits of negative publicity like these.

# 3 Manny Pacquiao versus Timothy Bradley WBO Welterweight title bout

Bradley’s split decision win to take the WBO Welterweight title from Pacquiao was the worst decision of the year in 2012. Pacquiao’s delay in coming out was a factor which influenced two judges, who had to wait too long for the fight to get underway.

#4 Floyd Mayweather Jr. Win 12 Miguel Cotto

Fought for the WBA Super and WBC Diamond welterweight titles. In the long run, this bout was a bookie megafight which signified little beyond Floyd keeping busy.

#5 Wladimir Klitschko Win 12 Mariusz Wach and Vitali Klitschko TKO 4 Manuel Charr

The Klitschko slate of heavyweight victims included the 27-0 Wach and the 21-0 Charr, but it all seemed boring as both Klitschokos continued to duck Robert Helenius and Alexander Povetkin, and anybody else of real substance.

#6 Andre Ward TKO 10 Chad Dawson

Dawson has changed trainers 10 times in 11 years. It showed when he dropped from light heavyweight to super middleweight and failed to win the WBC and WBA titles from the less favored Ward, who exposed him.

#7 Glen Johnson’s End of the line

The former light heavyweight champion, the ‘Road Warrior’, reached the end of the trail, with decision losses on the road to Andrzej Fofara and George Groves.

#8 Carl Froch TKO 5 Lucian Bute

Bute, 30-0, gets exposes in Nottingham as Froch wins the IBF Super Middleweight title. A mandatory rematch here seems a miserable excuse to sell tickets in Canada.

#9 Sergio Gabriel Martinez Win 12 Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Unbeaten in 47 fights, Chavez has Martinez down in the twelfth and final round but loses, not just the bout but to himself, after testing positive for marijuana after this important WBC Middleweight title bout. Martinez regains title.

#10 Death of Emanuel Steward

Professional boxing loses its finest trainer and HBO commentator in the business.

# 11 Lance Armstrong Doping Scandal

Indirectly related to boxing but must be mentioned since so many athletes, including professional boxers and mixed martial artists, are under the cloud of suspension for illegal steroid and human growth hormone use. Cycling champion Armstrong admitted on Oprah he was high on illegal performance enhancing substances before every race, leaving professional sports in a state of disgrace. Banned from cycling for life, Armstrong’s reputation was beyond redemption, but at least he finally came clean.

# 12 Death of Angelo Dundee

At 90, Dundee, Muhammad Ali’s trainer, remained one of boxing’s most colorful figures. A great loss to the sport.

# 13 Rise of Adrien ‘The Problem’ Broner to Lightweight Champion

At age 23, the 25-0 Broner, after disposing of Antonio DeMarco, is easily boxing best pound for pound fighter at age 23, far ahead of rising Mexican star Saul Alvarez.
