Anderson-Lartey Newark Fight Card Preview and Weights
By Robert Brizel, Real Combat Media Correspondent
Newark, NJ (January 18. 2013)– Saturday evening, January 19, 2013, at Robert Treat Best Western Hotel in Newark, New Jersey, a seven bout card of pro boxing will take place featuring a ten round main event bout between welterweights ‘Slick’ Michael Anderson of Newark area and Ghana’s Emmanuel Lartei Lartey. The card is a co-promotion between Renee Aiken’s All Out Promotions and Marius Kolodriej of Global Boxing. The card will be broadcast live worldwide via pay-per-view at Gofightlive.tv over the internet.
‘Slick’ Michael Anderson, a former Shane Mosley, Golden Boy and Gary Shaw protege, has a career record of 12-1 with 10 knockouts. Anderson is coming off a first round knockout win over Miguel Angel Munguia in October 2012 at Essex County College in Newark. Munguia has 50 pro bouts and a most padded record.
Ghana southpaw Emmanuel Lartei Lartey has a record of 13-0-1 with seven knockouts, and is coming off a six round decision win over Bryan Abraham on August 11, 2012, a fighter with a losing record. Lartei Lartey’s record includes two twelve round decision wins, over Isaac Quartey in 2006, and Kaizer Mabuza in 2007, and a ten round decision over Sidney Siquera in 2007.
Besides the Abraham bout, Lartey knocked out 3-19 Joey Ortega in the second round in 2011, and stopped 3-4 Carlos Ramos in 2012 before the Abraham bout to round out his three American bouts, which did not prove much. The issue with Lartei Lartey is he came to the United States hoping some big promoter would sign him. Despite the Mabuza win, Lartey has not yet found the lucky pot of gold since he left Ghana for the United States. Lartey remains unbeaten since his professional debut in 2005. Lartey also remains a mostly underestimated undiscovered boxer.
Both Anderson, 32, and Lartey, 31, are now at the critical point in their careers. In the spirit of ‘the undiscovered country’, both fighters now find themselves at career crossroads in Saturday’s main event. Is it one fight too soon for Anderson, or one fight too many for Lartey? The Nick Casal loss raised questions about Anderson, while the win over Mabuza proved Lartey, now out of Gleason’s Gym, can fight.
Since Anderson has never gone past four rounds, while the southpaw Lartei Lartey has gone more than four rounds 10 times and has 38 rounds experience fighting between rounds five and 12, Lartei Lartey will try to drag Anderson into deep waters. Lartey’s whole game plan is to make it a long night and turn the bout into a marathon. Just like races, if you’ve got a man who’s used to running 40 yard dashes, do you think he’s going to beat a man who runs marathons, in a long race?
To win, Michael Anderson has to put the pressure on Lartey real quick, and get him out of there as soon as possible. If Lartei Lartey, on the other hand, trains like he’s supposed to, he will win this fight hands down. Lartey can take out Anderson in the later rounds. This bout is just further proof of another case of bad matchmaking.
There’s no way Michael Anderson can win a decision in this bout because he does not yet have the energy to go the distance. Look at Michael Anderson’s record, all of his knockouts came in the fourth round or less. All of his decisions were in four rounds. Anderson has never seen the fifth round ever. And all of his wins were against mediocre opposition. The one time he suited up for a quality opponent, Nick Casal, Nick Casal stopped him in the third round in October 2011, a fight in which Anderson got knocked down twice, including in the third round.
Lartey is going to come in as a southpaw, and present problems, and work his southpaw stance to his advantage. With Lartey’s experience against much better opposition, such as Mabuza and Siquera (guys who can fight), Lartey should present a world of problems for Anderson. If Michael Anderson doe not take Lartey out in the first four rounds, look for this fight to end impressively in the favor of Emmanuel Lartei Lartey. Mabuza and Siquera would present problems for Nick Casal, and Lartey took both of them into the late rounds and beat both of them.
Mabuza should be comfortable in Newark. It’s his fourth fight in the United States, neutralizing Anderson’s Newark hometown advantage. Lartey comes from Accra, Ghana, he’s the real thing, he comes to win. Great fighters come from Accra: Ben Tackie, Azumah Nelson, Osumanu Adama, Albert Mensah, Emmanuel Clottey, David ‘Poison’ Kotey, Ike Quartey and now 24-0 Braimah Kamoko to name a few.
Prediction: Anderson by knockout in four rounds or less. Lartei Lartey by stoppage in the fifth round or later. Lartey, a contracted backup opponent to Sammy Ventura (who failed his medicals with the New Jersey Athletic Commission) is NOT an opponent. Lartey is a dangerous hungry fighter who is going to bring fireworks into the ring in Newark, but who knows? If Anderson is well prepared for the bout, he could make a go of it. However, in the end, Lartei Lartey is a 12 round fighter, and Michael Anderson is still a four round fighter. The bout appears a mismatch.
