Harold Lederman, HBO’s Best and Finest

By Robert Brizel, Real Combat Media Correspondent

New York, NY (December 14, 2012)– At 81 years old, Home Boxing Office’s most experienced boxing analyst of 35 years, Larry Merchant, will call his last fight card on December 15, 2012. With the loss of the late HBO commentator Emmanuel Steward and Larry Merchant from the HBO

Boxing commentator team, who will pick up the television microphone in 2013 and continue the HOB legacy of fine boxing commentating for the present generation?

The best surprise is no surprise. At 72, Harold Lederman remains as HBO’s finest!

From 1968 to 1999, Harold Lederman was one of the most respected judges in all of professional boxing. The last bout scored by Harold was the August 1999 International Female Boxer’s Association Middleweight title bout won by Trina Ortegon over Suzette Taylor by unanimous decision. The last eight bouts judged by Harold Lederman were also judged by his daughter Julie Lederman (a unique experience between father and daughter) Julie Lederman remains of the most respected boxing judges today.

From Azumah Nelson to Junior Jones, from Larry Holmes to Vitali Klitschko, Harold Lederman has judged them all. For the past 14 years, Harold Lederman has served as an HBO commentator with one important characteristic-he always gets the fight description and the outcome right. This translates into the respect and admiration of millions of fight fans worldwide.

Whenever there is a fight card in New York City or New Jersey, Harold Lederman is there as John Q. Citizen, not as a commentator, keeping himself well informed and on top of the hottest prospects and rising stars closest to home.

In making the transition from pharmacist to boxing judge to expert commentator, Harold Lederman is a most unique future hall of fame candidate. He is more the ordinary face everyone loves, an ordinary guy with a great love for the fight games and calling it as he sees it. More often than not, Harold Lederman gets it right when many judges get it wrong. AS HBO telecasts head into uncharted waters without some of the old familiar faces, one face and voice is a constant, good old Harold’s. Boxing, sports, and life, will continue. Nothing lasts forever, but with Harold Lederman behind the HBO microphone, the HBO ship will continue sailing in a good direction. Harold as the primary commentator? HBO remains in good hands.
