Hull, UK -January 19th is the date confirmed for the IBF world title clash between British fighter Kell Brook and St Louis fighter Devon Alexander, a fight which provides a legitimate world title shot for Kell Brook. Brook pushed himself into the number one contender spot by knocking out Hector Saldivia in the third round on the night of October 20th, the very same night Devon Alexander claimed the IBF title with a convincing points victory over the big punching Randall Bailey.

When Kell Brook turned down a possible career defining fight with Welterweight champion Timothy Bradley only a couple of months ago, people began to question Special K’s ambition to fulfil his talent. On the other side of the pond, after an ugly defeat to the very same Timothy Bradley, Devon Alexander found himself on the lucky side of the judges, gaining disputed decisions against both Lucas Matthyse and Andreas Kotelnik. Up next was the tough argentine Marcos Maidana, who come just punches away from knocking Amir Khan out in the biggest fight of his career. Devon won a hard fought victory, in which he adopted tactics that neutralized Maidana’s offense with continuous clinching. Although this was a defining factor in the fight, Devon still showed solid durability and good inside fighting skills to outsmart and out battle Maidana. Here we have a contest that could be make or break the career of both fighters, with Kell finally getting the chance to prove to the world he is far from a hype job. For Devon Alexander, he has finally got the chance to prove he is an elite level fighter. A loss at this stage in Kell’s career could see him fall into insignificance as a talent that never became.

The fight which is set to be aired on Showtime Boxing is likely to gain interest from boxing fans new old. It is not often we get a genuine 50/50 clash, but here, we have a fight that is going to be hard to pick. Do you go with the unproven talent and ability of Kell Brook, or the experience and effective fighting style of Devon Alexander? For me, it’s Kell Brook. Devon will cause problems for any 147lbs fighter, but at the top of the game, he is out of his depth. Although Brook is unproven, he has been given the chance to put his talent into action on a worldwide stage and I think on the 19th of January, we will see a fit and motivated Kell Brook show the boxing world that he means business.
