HBO BOXING AFTER DARK RECAP: BRONER DOMINATES DEMARCO

By: Lita B. Kaufman-Ringside

Seth Mitchell v Johnathon Banks

Atlantic City, NJ–Banks came out with a vengeance and it showed in Round 1.  Mitchell was clearly the hometown area favorite. Banks appeared to be in a bit of trouble in the middle of the 1st round as Mitchell dominated him with repeated body shots. Mitchell landed one to Banks face at the end of the 1st round bell.
Banks rebounded in Round 2 with speed and power causing Mitchell to appear dazed. It looked as though Mitchell slipped and stumbled early on in 2. Late in the 2nd Round it was over as Seth Mitchell succumbed to Banks’ power. This was clearly the upset of the evening.

Banks was fighting tonight in honor of Emanuel Steward after training and perhaps sparring with Wladimir Klitscko was the difference. Banks could a future opponent for the Heavyweight Championship against Klitschko. Could Banks be the next great American Heavyweight? At the end of the fight, Banks said I did this for Emanuel.

Could the fights at Atlantic City be what boxing as a whole needs to turn around the popularity of the sport?

The possibility of Johnathon Banks as a prospect the be the next Great American Heavyweight is close on the horizon.

Fight ended at 2:47 in Round 2 by TKO…

Scheduled for 12 Rounds

Then we have Adrien “The Problem” Broner who can possibly bring excitement back to boxing as he has a long career in front of him and can cull the younger crowd with his off beat style, antics and marketing. I heard he was selling his signature hairbrushes in the lobby. Pure genius marketing.

Broner skillfully & mercilessly beat down Antonio DeMarco in textbook style…

I was expecting a grand entrance by Broner and he did not disappoint looking like Miss Kitty sans red bow. He was wearing pink sequined trunks with white and black trim. Like Broner, DeMarco would not becout showboated and was flanked by a character in a skeleton suit with illuminated face mask. Both men donned pink gloves.

Boys, Halloween passed 3 weeks ago! Now, to business, this fight was a real treat!

Although Rounds 1 and 2 appeared uneventful and downright boring, if you could see the focus on Broner’s face and how methodically measured out his victim while staring into his eyes for the kill, you would know that it was worth the wait. Most of the striking action was performed by Broner who did follow through with a few shots to the face and body. The opponents tapped the pink gloves so often however it made one think of a sissy fight.

At the end of Round 3, things begin to get interesting. It was DeMarco who landed several head rocking blows to Broner. Round 4 they were pretty equal going blow for blow. That is until the final minute when Adrien became “The Problem” as he brutally unleashed the beast which ultimately ended in the demise of DeMarco. Much respect should be given to DeMarco however who showed courage and spirit as he got annihilated for much of the remainder of the fight.

In Round 7, DeMarco tried to comeback and hit Broner with some serious combinations mainly to the body. The only way for DeMarco to win at that point was a TKO which wasn’t going to happen.

The beating continued through the bell in Round 8 when Broner was declared winner by TKO by finally downing DeMarco so hard the when he went down, he stayed down long after the bell rang. It was so long and brutal of a pounding that I would imagine DeMarco sustained some serious damage to his head and face which he can hopefully rebound from.

This was a very exciting fight that brought in the crowd, kept them continuously entertained and left them wanting more. Keep your eye out for Broner because “The Problem” may be fighting in your town soon.
