UFC on FX: Browne vs. Bigfoot
By Head MMA Writer: Michael Alexander
After another great FX card, the UFC can’t help but smile. There has been serious criticism on the UFC for cancelling events and scheduling main events with undeserving fighters, however tonight was just another example of the UFC doing what it does best: Putting on some of the most entertaining fights in all of combat sports.
Justin Edwards def. Josh Neer via Submission (Guillotine- :45 Round 1)
Fantastic fight by Edwards. After flying under the radar, he ended this fight with a deadly guillotine. Now sporting a 2-2 record in the UFC, Edwards should look to jump right back into the action in an upcoming card.
John Dodson def. Jussier Formiga via TKO (4:35 Round 2)
This fight was a technical yet dull match, at least up until the waning moment of the second round. Dodson pulverized Formiga with devastating punches until the ref was forced to end the match (Poor stoppage by the ref though, Formiga was gone way before the fight was stopped.) With this win, Dodson is now the #1 contender to the Flyweight belt.
Jake Ellenberger def. Jay Hieron by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
While entertaining, it felt like this fight was held back from a barn burner. Ellenberger, who is known for going all out, was conservative and picked his shots, while it was obvious the Hieron was looking for the KO. Ellenberger has once again put himself in discussion for a top 5 matchup, while Hieron proved he is still entertaining fighter and deserving of more fights in the UFC.
Antonio Silva def. Travis Browne via TKO (3:27 Round 1)
Another example of a fight that is hard to judge due to an early injury. A closely contested fight in the beginning, Browne sustained a knee injury that obviously hampered him from being able to fight to his fullest abilities. Bigfoot smelled blood and came in like a madman, landing a big punch that dropped Browne and great ground and pound until the ref was forced to stop the fight. If the injury didn’t happen, who knows how the fight would have turned out. However, Bigfoot still won a violent TKO victory and looks to take another steo toward a fight with a top 5 opponent.
