Kelly Pavlik vs. Andre Ward is close to being done
According to many sources, a deal with Kelly Pavlik (40-2, 34KO’s) vs. (Andre Ward 26-0, 15 Ko’s) is close to being signed, pending final negotiations. Top Rank and Dan Goosen are working on a deal that would most likely have this fight take place on HBO in Las Vegas, Nevada on February 28. Andre Ward would not be fighting in his usual location, which is hometown of Oakland, CA.
Both fighters are coming off impressive performances. Andre Ward, age 28, dominated Chad Dawson in his last fight winning by TKO. Ward also defeated Carl Froch last December to win the Showtime Super 6 Tournament. Andre Ward is currently ranked number 2 on the Real Combat Media Pound for Pound Boxing Rankings.
Kelly Pavlik, age 30, has been impressive on the comeback trail and has won 4 fights in a row. Kelly is the former Middleweight World champion. Kelly has never been finished in his career and has only lost decisions to Sergio Martinez and Bernard Hopkins. During his recent comeback, he has switched trainers and now works with Robert Garcia in Oxnard, CA.
If this fight happens, I can see Ward winning a unanimous decision and controlling Pavlik for most of the fight. Pavlik fights forward and is the stronger puncher. However Ward has the better footwork, is more accurate of a puncher that can fight well from the inside and on the outside. Kelly Pavlik has a puncher’s chance in this fight. I doubt leaving Oakland will have any effect on Ward’s performance.
