Jamaica, NY – On Saturday 22, 2012, New Legend Boxing Promotions, Old World Boxing Promotions and W.O.N Promotions promoted the first ever live professional boxing at the Resorts World Casino, Jamaica, NY. The main event showcased Light Heavyweights Joe Smith from Shirley, New York vs. Yasin Abdur-Rashid from Brooklyn, NY.
Previous to the fight I spoke with Smith’s trainer, Jerry Capobianco and asked him what is their game plan going into the fight. Capobianco said, “He’s [Smith] a puncher and he hits hard. He has 10 wins and 10 knockouts. His opponent is a step up and he’s going to show everyone what he is made of”. And in fact Smith did exactly that. During the middle of round 2, Smith exploded on Rashid in the ring. He then proceeded on landing a beautiful upper cut. During round 3 again Smith proved that he was too much for him while landing uppercut after uppercut on Rashid. The referee, Eddie Claudio stopped the bout 1 minute, 57 seconds into the round.
Joe Smith, Jr. increased his record to 11-1-0, 11 Kos and Yasin Abdur-Rashid decreased his record to 7-3-0, 2 Kos.
Other bouts of the evening:
Jr. Middleweights – Frank Galarza and Alantez Fox. **Best fight of the nite**. This fight was an all out war. The judges scored it 77-75 for Galarza, 77-75 for Fox and 76-76, therefore, it was declared a draw. There was some mention of a re-match and I’m sure everyone in attendance would love to see that.
Featherweight – Juan Dominguez vs. Jesus Bayron. Winner Dominguez. All 3 judges scored it unanimously 59-52.
Featherweight – Rafael Vazquez vs. Jhovany Collado. Winner Collado by SD. Judges scored it 57-56 for Vazquez, 58-55 for Collado and 57-56 for Vazquez. This was a very competitive fight. Both have great chins and can take a punch. Vazquez went down in the 1st round.
Bantamweight – Elton Dharry vs. Gabriel Cruz. Winner Dharry by TKO. The referee stopped the contest at the end of round 2. Cruz left the ring bloody with a towel over his face.
Middleweight – Boyd Melson vs. Yolexcy Leiva Martinez. Winner by UD. Judges scored it 58-55, 59-54 and 59-54.
Lightweight – Angel Garcia vs. Pedro Andres. Winner Garcia by UD. Judges scored it 40-35, 39-36 and 39-36.
Featherweight – Allan Phelan vs. Micah Branch. Winner Branch by UD. All 3 judges scored it the same. 39-38.
Junior Middleweight – Daniel Gonzalez vs. Anthony Smith. Winner Daniel Gonzalez in by TKO, 1 minute, 1 second into round 2.
