Lyoto Machida out vs “Bones” Jones, Vitor Belfort gets title shot instead
In what may be go down as one of the craziest and most animosity filled days in UFC history, UFC 151 gets canceled in light of a partially torn MCL in the knee of Dan Henderson. After turning down a potential match with Chael Sonnen, Jon “Bones” Jones earned the criticism of UFC President Dana White, stating that he has no legitimate reason for ducking him.
In later news, an immediate rematch was set up with the number one title contender waiting in the wings after a dismantling of Ryan Bader, Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida. Due to inumerous harsh words on behalf of Jones, especially in regards to dropped revenue due to low pay per view buys, Machida publicly pulled out of the rematch leaving an open door in late September for another potential title contender.
No one would have thought that Vitor “The Phenom” Belfort (21-9) would be called up from middleweight to face Jon Jones at UFC 152 in Toronto. Belfort was already hard in training at the Blackzilians camp under the guidance of Mario “Zen” Sperry getting ready for Alan Belcher for UFC 153 in Brazil. Looks like Belcher will be left without an opponent for the time being but congratulations to Belfort in getting a dream of a match set in his lap.
Belfort is a former UFC light heavyweight champion winning the title by controversial cut against UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture and subsequently losing the title in his following defense against the same person, “The Natural.”
