There is an exciting fight in the mix as two Mexican warriors agreed to do battle on Sept 15th for the WBC Junior Welterweight Title at 154lbs according to Golden Boy Promotion’s Ceo, Richard Schaefer. Saul Canelo Alvarez (40-0-1, 29 KO) will be fighting Victor Ortiz (29-3-2, 23 KO) which is scheduled at the Las Vegas, Nevada’s Mandalay Bay on Showtime PPV. But, Victor Ortiz still needs to defeat Josesito Lopez (29-4, 17 KO) on June 23rd in Los Angeles for this fight to happen .
Canelo was expected to fight Paul Williams on September 15, until Williams suffered a horrible motorcycle accident a few weeks ago which left him paralyzed.
Victor Ortiz was expected to take on Andre Berto in a rematch, but Berto tested positive for a synthetic testosterone drug called Nanodrolone, which ended up canceling the rematch. Lopez is the designated replacement for Andre Berto.
On May 5th, Alvarez defeated boxing legend Shane Mosley (46-8-1,1, 39 KO) by unanimous decision that ultimately convinced Mosley to retire.
“Josesito Lopez is no walk in the park, he’s coming to fight, and it’s a huge opportunity (for him),” De La Hoya said. “So I am concerned. Does it put more pressure on Victor? Absolutely. This June 23 fight is important. He’s going to have to go out and show that he is a knockout king to make sure he gets the Sept. 15 fight.”
“You can leave your scorecards at home,” said Golden Boy Promotions CEO 46 Wins, 8 Losses, 1 Draw, 1 No Contest, 39 Knockouts . “By the way, the ‘Knockout Kings’ theme is a theme that we had focused on before. It’s a reference to the sport that fight fans want to see exciting fights.”
“Fans deserve great fights and good decisions,” De La Hoya said.
There is a possiblity that Top Rank Promotions may schedule a September 15th showdown between Sergio Martinez vs Julio César Chávez Jr. on the same night.
