Humberto Soto vs Lucas Matthysse Recap

By: Tony Stewart

The Lucas Matthysse vs. Humberto Soto title fight for the vacant WBC Continental America’s Light Welterweight championship more than delivered on its promise of a combustible match. This would become a boxing fan’s dream bout as both combatants who are known for committing to testing the mettle of their opponents left everything in the ring this night.

Lucas Matthysse, several fights removed two very close decision losses against Zab Judah and Devon Alexander had the perfect opponent for his style of attack in Humberto Soto. Humberto Soto is known for being able to stand in and rip off fast scoring combination punches, having all the necessary tools to handle anything brought to him. From the opening rounds, Matthysse was intending to pound Soto to the body to try and wear down the motor of Soto and to bring down his hands allowing Matthysse to score with short sharp counter punches to the chin of Soto which began to take effect as the rounds began to mount up.

It was expected that Humberto Soto’s boxing ability and combination punching would bedevil Matthysse’s attack. Initially it appeared that Lucas was encountering difficulty in finding the proper rhythm to match Soto’s pace. The pendulum began to swing to one fighter’s side off a flash knockdown at the end of the second round right at the bell.

While the ref waved off the knockdown, from that point forward Lucas Matthysse began to impose his strength through his body shots against Soto.  Both men were applying their technique equally well going into the fourth round with Soto still maneuvering around the ring using his boxing but it was slowly devolving into more of a slugfest favoring the thudding punches of Mattysse.

Lucas Matthysse is throwing with more vengeance in his punches now against Soto’s body and head. He is ripping punches harder with vicious intent and it begins to slowly take over the pace of Soto as he begins to box from a more defensive posture. Round 4 ends with both men locked together in the center of the ring but clearly the punching power of Matthysse is discovering more success against Soto.

Round 5 begins with Matthysse intending to commit more pressure to Soto’s body. Humberto Soto is breathing heavy at this point and is still delivering his combination punches to little effect. At the 2:00 point in the fight Matthysse ripped off an avalanche of vicious power punches to the body and head area of Soto who stumbles backwards to the ropes where Lucas lands one strong overhand right which drops Soto to the canvass. He receives a standing 8 count from the ref and the round ends. However his corner decides that he is no longer able to continue in the fight.

Lucas Matthysse is awarded the title of now the WBC Continental American’s Champion and has received the honor of being the first to knockdown and knockout Humberto Soto, who had never been down in 68 fights. Congratulations to Lucas Matthysse and Humberto Soto for delivering a star performance, showing once again what the sport of boxing can provide when both combatants fight with dedication and heart.
