Cory Spinks vs Cornelius Bundrage Recap

By: Tony Stewart

K9 is too much for Cory Spinks

The IBF Junior Middleweight Championship rematch fight between Cornelius ‘K9’ Bundrage and Cory Spinks went the only way it really could have. The dog in canine took yet another bite out of a game but ultimately physically overmatched Cory Spinks to retain his championship title and throwing his name into the hat of potential opponents of superstar Canelo Alvarez.

The fight started with Spinks showing why he’s the son of a world heavyweight champion. He fought a fight befitting that lineage, spirited heart and determination however he simply lacked the strength to keep the thunderous right hand of Bundrage from its lethal intent.

Spinks was matching the out-the-gate attack of K9 with jabs and footwork. Circling and trying to time Bundrage’s jab Spinks is caught stepping backwards by a looping right hand sending him hurdling to the canvass near the end of the first round. He rose up seemingly unfazed but definitely startled and his legs seemed a bit less mobile than just 30 seconds ago.

The next several rounds would see Cory pressing the attack nullifying K9’s ability to unleash his right. He would begin to employ his boxing grade on the more brawling and waiting for the right moment Bundrage. He would find his safety net being inside K9’s range ready to tie him up after snapping off quick punches to the body.

Spinks got his second wind by the 5th round. The knockdown a distant memory and it is clear they were both falling into pattern. Spinks pressing the attack and Bundrage looking for that one time to land a power punch to change the tide of the fight. Spinks was gaining confidence with each passing round setting the pace for the fight more and more.

The end was signaled in the first 30 seconds of the 7th round with a straight right hand that would send Cory Spinks straight to the edge of the canvass. Spinks was up by the count of 7 but the ref took extra long to look him in the eye before assured he could continue. 30 seconds later Spinks was floored again by a looping right hook. The ref would take a second long look before allowing him back into the fight and for the next 90 seconds. We watched what some might consider to be the final 90 seconds of Cory Spinks professional career as he fought to survive but was mercifully saved from further damage by the ref with 15 seconds left on the clock.

Cornelius ‘K9 ‘ Bundrage improved his record to 32 wins with 18 by ko while Cory Spinks fell to 39 wins and 7 losses. Time will tell what both men have left in their careers but for the immediate we can expect to see a new name in the Alvarez sweepstakes.
