Recap of Juan Manuel Marquez vs.  Sergey Fedchenko

By: UK Boxing Writer Jon Campbell

Last night as expected Juan Manuel Marquez claimed the WBO Interim Light-Welterweight world title in a twelve-round unanimous decision over the Ukranian Sergey Fedchenko. He pleased his hometown fans with a good performance and demonstrated his great ability. The belt he won constitutes his fourth weight-class in which he has gained a world title. Although it was a clear landslide victory in which practically every round was won by Marquez, Fedchenko must be complimented on the level of opposition he provided, regardless of the extent to which he was an underdog. During the bout it was quite clear that the difference in class we all suspected would be the there was present. Marquez was not shy in delivering pretty much his whole repertoire at some point or other during the fight, mostly to his success.

It is safe to say we got for the most part as expected from Marquez in terms of what he brought to the table. What was a slight surprise was Marquez began to become frustrated because he was failing to stop the fight round after round, this built towards the end of the fight and in the last couple of rounds he got close but could not quite get there. Another thing is that he was primarily the aggressor, which is not usually his role when against top level opposition but is was not surprising against lesser competition he would not shy from going forward and taking more risks. In the preview I pointed out that Fedchenko has not been knocked out and this fight would be a test of his chin, it was apparent quite early that he passed this test as he took some big punches are seldom appeared to be considering going down. Another thing I must point out about Fedchenko is his impressive skill set which exceeded what I expected of him. He was elusive, difficult to back into a corner, and had the engine to see the fight through. He even caught Marquez coming forward with a respectable number of strikes. His corner crowded round him cheering and grinning at the final bell expressing their happiness at his performance and so they should.

Moving on from this for Marquez will consist of two maybe three big fights most likely ending with another homecoming to cap of a legendary career which will go amongst the greatest in Mexican boxing history. He has stated his intention to retire from the sport by the end of the year but I believe he may have one fight in 2013. His main target is the fourth fight against Manny Pacquaio, which of course we all want to see, yet he may have to wait until next year. There is talk of a fight with Brandon Rios, who based on his performance last night would have very little chance in upsetting Marquez. Fedchenko on the other hand will be glad he could go to the hometown of a great and demonstrate his abilities well against one of the best technicians we have seen. He surely has been noticed on the world level and will no doubt move on to bigger and better things. Therefore we have a great positive outcome from the fight in which both fighters move foreword and achieve what they want, regardless of the result.
