Erik Morales set to Defend WBC Title vs Danny Garcia Erik ‘El Terrible’ Morales (52-7-0 36 KOs) will defend his 140lb WBC title belt this Saturday against Danny ‘Swift’ Garcia (22-0-0 14 KOs) when the two meet at the Reliant Area in Houston, Texas this Saturday night.  For Morales, on the tail end of his career at age 35, this match represents a chance to stay relevant and possibly land one or two more big fights before retirement.

For the 24 year old Garcia, it’s a chance to score a win against a living legend and take his career to the next level.  Much is at stake for both men.

Many thought that Morales’ career was over after four consecutive losses starting in 2005, two at the hands of Manny Pacquiao.  After the second Pacman loss and a loss to David Diaz, Morales took nearly three years off from the sport during which time he dealt with personal issues.  He made his return in 2010 and has looked good since then, winning four of five bouts.  Although his age is starting to show and he does not look to be quite as well conditioned as he was before his time off, he’s still a very dangerous opponent.  A cagey veteran who knows all the tricks of the trade, El Terrible is not someone that any fighter can take lightly.  He’s still got good power and throws fast, straight punches in combination.  Morales will be the older, smaller man but he’ll be ready to capitalize on any mistake that Garcia makes.

For Garcia, this fight is a huge opportunity to put a big time name on his resume.  It’s also a huge step up in the level of opposition.  He’s fought some quality opponents but no one of Morales’ caliber.  Be that as it may, the sports books have Garcia as a solid favorite in this bout. Garcia likes to fight on the outside and that may be his best chance in this fight.  Although he’s the bigger man he may not want to fight on the inside or brawl too much with Morales.  His best bet is to use his footwork, stamina, and hand speed to try to win a decision.  Going into the trenches, or letting the fight turn into a slugfest would favor Morales.

Garcia is a young up and comer with a bright future ahead of him.  However, the old warrior still has a little something left in the tank even if he’s no longer elite.  Morales will find the flaws in Garcia’s game and systematically break him down.  Prediction: Morales by late round KO. The fight card will be televised by HBO at 10 pm EST Saturday, March 24th.
