Cotto vs Mayweather Set For May 5th

The wait is finally over, Floyd Mayweather Jr. has finally announced WBA Super Welterweight Champion Miguel Cotto as his next opponent on May 5, 2012 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The past few weeks has been a, whose fighting who in boxing. After the attempt to make Mayweather Jr. vs Pacquiao happen did not workout, the flood gates opened up as to who was going to fight Mayweather Jr. next. The leading names were Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez for his possible next opponents.

Miguel Cotto also had another option which was a rematch with Manny Pacquiao in June, but talks in that negotiation failed when Miguel Cotto did not agree to the weight stipulation Manny Pacquiao was asking for. This allowed Cotto to explore a possible clash with undefeated WBC Welterweight Champion Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Today after Floyd Mayweather Jr. appearence in front Nevada State Athletic Committee, he announced that he will be facing Miguel Cotto on May 5th.

The May 5th fight between WBA Super Middleweight Champion Miguel Cotto and  WBC Welterweight Champion would take place at 154 for Cotto’s WBA Super Welterweight Title.
