By: Boxing Writer Frank Rivera
The National Guard Armory in North East Philly hosted a boxing event by POWER PRODUCTIONS, in association with Fingerman Promotions & Battle Strong Boxing presented: BOXING RINGSIDE THE QUIET STORM, featuring two main events along with local Philadelphia prospects and none local fighters on Jan 13th, 2012.
Local and fan favorite Miguel Cartagena (4-0, 3 KO’s) took on David Rodriquez in a 6 round Super Featherweight bout. The Cartagena vs Rodriguez fight only lasted 30 seconds, Rodriguez tried to block a right hook from Cartagena but instead, Rodriguez ended up injuring his left hand. The referee stopped the fight giving Cartagena his second TKO victory and maintain his undefeated record.
The IBS (Independent Boxing Syndicate) National Title for the Junior Welterweight Division was on the line in a 6 round title bout. The contenders fighting for the title were Tim Witherspoon Jr (6-2-1, 2 KO’s) vs Tevin Farmer (4-2-1, 1 KO’). Witherspoon started off slow, allowing Farmer to take the early rounds of the fight. In the later rounds Witherspoon seemed to have settled down and started boxing Farmer, landing his jab and timely combinations. Unfortunately for Tim Witherspoon Jr., the fight was only scheduled for 6 rounds Farmer won by majority decision making Tevin Farmer the new IBS Junior Welterweight Champion.
The Co-Main event, featured hot prospect Angel Ocasio (6-0-1, 1 KO’s) vs Jason Sosa(4-1-2, 2KO’s) in a 6 round Lightweight bout. Ocasio the heavy favorite, came out boxing Sosa very well using his jab, footwork, lateral movements and speed to keep Sosa off balance. Sosa was able to regroup and make a comeback by countering and pressuring Ocasio enough for the judges to score the fight a draw.
In the MAIN EVENT local Philadelphia and former NABF champion, Farah Ennis (17-1, 12 KO’s) took on Grover Young (5-5-1, 2KO’s) in a 8 round Light Heavyweight bout. From the opening bell you could see that Ennis was the better skilled fighter. Ennis controlled the fight using his jab, power punches and quick footwork against Young. Ennis hurt Young in the 5th round and ending the fight by the way of KO.
