On Friday night we saw Martin Murray (23-0-1, 10 KO’s) take on WBA World Middleweight Champion Felix Sturm (36-2-2, 15 KO’s) at the SAP Arena in Mannheim, Germany. Murray came into the fight trying to capture the middleweight title and bring it back home with him and keep his undefeated record. He was still able to accomplish one of goals. Both fighters fought to a draw with the judges scoring the fight 116-112 Sturm, 115-113 Murray and 114-114 allowing Sturm to retain his WBA title.
Martin Murray fought a very good fight against a seasoned veteran in Felix Sturm. He was not intimidated by the champion as he was the aggressor in several of the rounds. Sturm fought his typical fight, he would give up the early part of the round and then come on strong toward the end of the round. Murray in the middle rounds was taking control of the fight, but as the fight went into the championship rounds, you were able to see Sturm starting to take control. Murray was able to do enough to walk away with his undefeated record, but not enough to walk away with the middleweight championship of the world.
Martin Murray did not win the title on this night. What he was able to do is expose himself to the world that he could in fact be a legit contender in the middleweight division. I liked what I saw from Murray in this fight against Sturm. We should expect good things to happen for Murray based on his last night’s performance .
