RECAP OF THE SUPER SIX TOURNAMENT
BY: FRANK RIVERA
On December 17, 2011 in Atlantic City, NJ Andre Ward(24-0, 13 KO) the WBA Super Middleweight Champion and Carl Froch(28-1, 20 KO) the WBC Super Middleweight Champion will finally bring the tournament to a close. The dragged out Super Six Middleweight Tournament has been going on since October 17, 2009 and has featured six of the top Super Middleweights in it’s division. The winner of the tournament will not only win the Showtime tournament trophy, but also will hold The Ring, WBA, and WBC Super Middleweight Titles.
Andre Ward did not hold a title when he entered the tournament, he won the WBA title in Stage 1, when he defeated then champion Mikkel Kessler. Ward has defended his title since defeating Kessler and has held it through the Semi Final rounds of the tournament. Ward would face Arthur Abraham in the semi-final and he would go on to defeat Abraham in a lopsided win by unanimous decision. Ward has won every one of his fights very convincingly, but he has yet to face a fighter that can give him problems. Carl Froch just might be that fighter that can give Ward plenty of problems and push him to the edge of defeat. Andre Ward will defend his WBA title in the finals and hopes to walk away with Froch’s WBC and The Ring title.
Froch’s path to the finals has not been as smooth as Andre Ward, but has shown that he belongs among the elite. Froch was the WBC champion entering the tournament but lost the title to Mikkel Kessler by unanimous decision. On August 25, 2010, Mikkel Kessler withdrew from the tournament due to an eye injury he suffered. On September 6, 2010, the WBC vacated the Super Middleweight Title setting up the championship fight between Froch and Abraham. Froch would regain the vacated WBC Super Middleweight Title when he defeated Arthur Abraham by unanimous decision. Froch’s next opponent in the tournament was seasoned veteran Glen Johnson in the semi-final. He would retain his WBC Super Middleweight Title by defeating Johnson by majority decision moving him into the finals.
There is no doubt that Froch will come into this fight ready to give Ward the biggest test of his career. Froch is a solid fighter that can easily change the outcome of a fight with one punch. Froch will try his best to force Ward into a brawl, while trying to control the fight by applying a lot pressure on Ward. The only disadvantage I see Froch having, is Ward’s speed and boxing skills. Ward is a technical boxer with very good footwork that can frustrate Froch as the fight goes into the later rounds. Ward is very intelligent and knows what needs to be done to maintain control of the fight. Ward will probably uses his clinching style to disrupt Froch’s rythym and his pressure attack. Ward is also equally good with both hands and that may cause another problem.
The finally of the Super Six Middleweight Tournament will be an exciting night of boxing to watch. We will finally see who will be the Super Middleweight Champion of the division.
