José A. Maldonado is a writer, teacher, founder of punchrate.com, and boxing correspondent for realcombatmedia.com. During an amateur career that spanned over ten years, José had the pleasure of working under such trainers as Dub Huntley, Baba Sumaila, Javier Capetillo, Clemente Medina, and Jerry Boyd (RIP) in numerous Los Angeles boxing gyms.  As an amateur boxer, José trained with many professional fighters (Sugar Shane Mosley, Hector López, Miguel Martínez, Genaro Hernández [RIP], to name a few) and participated in various top-level tournaments, including the 2000 Junior Olympics.

Jose is a graduate of UC Santa Barbara and holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing: Fiction from California State University, Long Beach.  Currently, he teaches writing for the city of Whittier while working on a collection of short stories as well as a screenplay.  You can contact him at [email protected]
