When Joe Joyce faces Derek Chisora in a significant comeback heavyweight battle for both later this month, it will be hard to call either winner an upset over the other. However, 2 significant upsets happened in July and Shane Mosley Jr. is now on the boxing map in July 2024 having at least turned heads in the boxing world with his win over Daniel Jacobs.
Middleweight Shane Mosley Jr., with a two inches reach advantage and at age 33 four years younger than his foe, retired aging veteran Danny Jacobs, who lost to relative inactivity, motivation and father time. Mosley, 22-4 with 12 knockouts, Las Vegas, Nevada, outpointed the aging Jacobs, 37-5 with 30 knockouts, Brooklyn, New York, who was cut on the left eye from an accidental headbutt in the eighth round. Scores of 100-90, 99-91, and 99-91 for Mosley insured Jacobs’ days in the sun is finally done. Son of a former great, Mosley Jr. is a rare son of a former fighter who, like Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., was able to shine in the ring. Mosley wants a world title bout with Erislandy Lara. He might get his wish.
In the one million dollar Matchroom Prize-Fighter tournament semi-final, middleweight Kieron Conway, 21-3-1 with six knockouts, Northampton, United Kingdom, went into Yamato Arena in Osaka, Japan, and earned a 33 thousand dollars bonus, with a seventh round stoppage of China’s Ainiwaer Yilixiati, 19-2 with 14 knockouts, Urumqi, China. This was Matchroom Boxing and promoter Eddie Hearn’s first venture into Japan. Conway’s three defeats have come at the hands of opponents with a combined record of 30-0 when he fought them.
Robson Conceicao, 19-2-1 with nine knockouts, Salvador, Brazil. Between 2021 and 2023, Conceicao was 1-2-1 with one no contest, only one win in a three years stretch, going 36 rounds and 0-2-1 in world super featherweight title bouts. He has won both of his 2024 bouts, including a 12 round split decision upset over favored O’Shaquie Foster, 22-3 with 12 knockouts, Houston, Texas, to win the World Boxing Council World Super Featherweight title. A rematch would seem to be in order for Foster after this sparkling upset by Conceicao.
