By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
Former British and European Super Featherweight champion Willie Limond of Glasgow, Scotland, ‘The Scottish Warrior’, who also held the WBU version of the World Lightweight title, died on April 15, 2024 at age 45.
A Bronze medalist as an amateur on Team Scotland at the European Cadet Championships at Elazig, Turkey in 1995, Limond fought as a professional between 1999 and 2023 in 48 pro bouts, winning 42 and losing six. Limond held the EBU European Union, BBBofC Celtic, Commonwealth Boxing Council Super Featherweight titles, the IBO Inter-Continental and WBU World Lightweight titles, and the BBBofC British and Commonwealth Boxing Council Super Lightweight titles at various points during his distinguished career.
Limond fought the likes of Ricky Burns, Erik Morales and Amir Khan during his career. Limond decked future world champion Khan at 02 Arena in the sixth round of their 2007 bout, only to get stopped after eight rounds. Limond was supposed to fight Joe Laws, the 14-2 British fighter known as the ‘Benwell Bomber’ on May 3, 2024. The cause of Limond’s death was a seizure while driving. Limon passed away after initially being found unresponsive in his car en route to a training session. Limond was also a boxing coach and mentor to young boxers at Scotland’s High Performance Center.
