King Callum Walsh Wins WBC Title at The Garden on UFC Fight Pass

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

New York, NY (March 16th, 2024)– The Freddie Roach trained ‘King’ Callum Walsh, 10-0 with eight knockouts, Cork, Ireland, advanced the cause of his promoter, Tom Loeffler, in the main event of a seven bout card at Madison Square Garden, on Friday, March 15, 2024, with a ninth round stoppage of a game but outmatched Dauren Yeleussinov, 11-4-1 with 10 knockouts, Brooklyn, New York, by way of Kazakhstan, to win the vacant World Boxing Council Americas Super Welterweight title, televised on UFC Fight Pass. Loeffler stated after the bout Walch would return to action next on a boxing card in June 2024 at Chumash Casino Resort in Santa Ynez, California.

Walsh, at age 23, is a young prospect on the rise, and his potential has not yet bene realized. Walsh gave a workmanlike performance, using combinations and hooks throughout the contest to back up Yeleussinov, who threw one punch at a time. Yeleussinov’s face, neck, shoulders, back and body showed ugly bruises and welts from the nasty affair. Yeleussinov took the fight dirty, wrestled at length, held often, and even threw Welch to the canvas. Welch had a consistent offense, though, and Yeleussinov, age 37, had no answer.

As the rounds progressed, the beating Welch put on Yeleussinov grew progressively worse and worse. The bout looked done at the end of the eighth round. The ringside doctor gave Yeleussinov, who stated he wanted to fight, one more round. However, when referee Eric Dali saw Welch, ranked 14th worldwide, throwing nonstop head and body bombs with Yeleussinov covering up on the ropes and sagging, the contest was stopped. It was a good stoppage, as Welch appeared to win every round. Yeleussinov was in the house throughout the contest, but as the later rounds revealed, his courage could not get him to the final bell.

Weight problems undoubtedly hurt Yelussinov’s chances of winning or going the distance. Yeleussinov had to lose 20 pounds between Tuesday and the Thursday weigh-in for this bout to clear the New York State Athletic Commission. Both fighters weighed 154 pounds.
