Lomachenko Will Stay & Fight in Kyiv, Haney versus Kambosos Could Be Next

Kyiv, Ukraine (March 23rd, 2022)– Vasyl Lomachenko has made his decision, and it comes as no surprise to everybody. Lomachenko will remain in Kyiv, Ukraine, to fight with his countryman for freedom as he believes it, rather than return to the ring to fight George Kambosos Jr. for his share of the World Lightweight title.
Kambosos promoter Lou DiBella, Kambosos’ promoter, told Boxing Scene that Egis Klimas, Lomachenko’s manager, informed him that Lomachenko will not leave Ukraine to train for an offered title bout fight with Kambosos at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne, Australia. DiBella and Bob Arum, Lomachenko’s promoter, had agreed to terms for Lomachenko to challenge Kambosos in a 12-round, 135-pound title unification bout which, if Lomachenko accepted (and he did not) would be televised worldwide on ESPN.
DiBella told Boxing Scene will now pursue a bout between Sydney’s Kambosos, 20-0 with 10 knockouts, Sydney, Australia, and Devin Haney, 27-0, 15 knockouts, Las Vegas, Nevada, for June 5 at Marvel Stadium, for the undisputed World Lightweight title, which would be streamed via ESPN the night of June 4, 2022 in the United States and other worldwide ESPN outlets.
Lomachenko, a southpaw, age 34. 16-2 with 11 knockouts, Oxnard, California, by way of Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, Ukraine, has held the WBO World Featherweight, WBA Super World Featherweight, WBO World Lightweight, WBC World Lightweight and WBA Super World Lightweight title. He currently holds the WBO Inter-Continental Lightweight title. His boxing future, in light of the Ukrainian conflict now in progress, and his decision NOT to return to the ring, remains uncertain.
