Anaheim, CA (January 17th, 2022)– UFC 270 kicks off the second card of the new year with two historic title fights in the first PPV of the year at the Honda Center in Anaheim, CA, as UFC Heavyweight Champion Francis Ngannou (16-3 MMA, 11-2 UFC) takes on undefeated UFC interim champ, Ciryl Gane (10-0 MMA, 7-0 UFC).
In an epic trilogy bout in the co-main event as Brandon Moreno defends his Flyweight belt against Deiveson Figueiredo. The first fight was a classic that ended in a draw in December 2020 at UFC 255 and the second fight ended with Brandon Moreno defeating Deiveson Figueiredo at UFC 262 in June 2021 by a third-round submission by a rear-naked choke.
Ngannou vs. Gane has a very interesting storyline behind this fight as Ngannou and Gane were former teammates at the MMA Factory gym in Paris, France. Ngannou ended up leaving for Las Vegas, NV after a financial dispute with his former trainer Fernand Lopez, who continues to train and corner Gane. Ngannou and Gane were former training partners and know each other well. Lopez is very familiar with Ngannou’s impressive punching power. Ngannou is the hardest puncher in UFC history. Gane is slightly the more technical and faster of the two fighters with his balanced Muay Thai approach that makes this an even fight on paper.
Another interesting part of this storyline is Ngannou’s future in the UFC is uncertain, with the champion being on the last fight on his contract. Ngannou mentioned he has plans to enter boxing and possibly fight Tyson Fury in the future if he can’t get a deal done with the UFC. Another possible scenario is the winner of the main event fighting former UFC Light Heavyweight champion Jon Jones later this year. However, UFC President Dana White is expecting this contest to be one of the best fights in UFC heavyweight history. Here is what Dana has to say about this fight…
“You got two guys that trained together, two guys that had a falling out and don’t like each other. One guy has unbelievable knockout power and the other guy moves around like a middleweight, probably the best tactical striker and heavyweight history. You couldn’t ask for a better matchup.”
“They’re both champions,” White added. “You’ve got one who has the interim title. The other one has the title. Everything’s on the line, and how in-depth, the bad blood is between the camps.
The rest of UFC 270 card gives us the return of Greg Hardy (7-4-1), when he takes on Sergey Spivak (13-3). Hardy has been successful in his transition from the NFL to the UFC.
UFC 270 has a Bantamweight showdown with two exciting fighters with Cody Stamann (19-4-1) vs. Said Nurmagomedov (14-2).
At 170, the exciting Michel Pereira (24-11) will take on Andre Fialho (14-4). Pereira has a lot of momentum with 3 wins in a row and Fialho enters the UFC with 4 wins a row, including a win over former UFC star, James Vick in January 2021. You can order this PPV below on ESPN+.
