BBBofC Suspends British Boxing in January 2022 Due to Surge of Omicron COVID-19 Variant

London, UK (January 2nd, 2021)– In a new dramatic development, effective immediately the BBBofC British Boxing Board of Control has suspended all amateur and professional boxing in the United Kingdom for the month of January 2022 and indefinitely for the future, due to the sudden surge, rise and spread of the Omicron Variant of the Covid-19 Novel Coronavirus Pandemic.
Chris Eubank Jr.’s scheduled middleweight bout with Liam Williams, already postponed due a shoulder injury sustained in training by Williams, has now been postponed indefinitely.
“Following advice from the British Boxing Board of Control Medical Panel, boxing tournaments (cards) under the jurisdiction of the BBBofC will be suspended for the month of January (2022),” according to General Secretary Robert Smith of the BBBofC.
The major question now out there, with Tyson Fury looking at defending his version of the world heavyweight titles against Dillian Whyte, and Anthony Joshua seeking a rematch for his heavyweight titles against Oleksandr Usyk, is when and where. Great Britain is certainly off the table in the foreseeable near future, leaving the heavyweight principals in a state of confusion, and contenders like Luis Ortiz and Filip Hrgovic in chaos, as Omicron could force the shutdown of boxing worldwide in the next week or two if the Pandemic trends continue.
