
Lara and Rakhimov Lead Valentine’s Weekend of Mixed Results

Friday, February 13, Saturday, February 14, and Valentine’s Day Sunday, February 14, 2021, completed a week of professional boxing leading to some unexpected results, as a number of fighters who emerged from isolation returned to the ring with mixed results.
17-0-1 Brian Carlos Castano of Buenos Aires, Argentina, a former World Boxing Association World Super Welterweight champion, won the World Boxing Organisation World Super Welterweight championship with a 12 round decision over 31-1 Patrick Teixeira of Sao Paulo, Brazil, at Fantasy Springs Casino, in Indio, California, on Friday, February 13, 2021. Teizeira fell short, and could not win the vacant WBO world title against a former world champion. On the same card, 31-1 International Boxing Federation World Super Featherweight champion Joseph “JoJo” Diaz of Downey, California, lost his title on the scales, then settled for a disappointing 12 round draw with 15-0 Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov of Ekaterinburg, Russian Federation.
On Saturday, February 13, 2021, At Wembley Arena in Wembley, United Kingdom, 22-2 Mauricio “Bronco” Lara of Mexico City, Mexico, decked 30-0 Josh Warrington of Leeds, United Kingdom in the fourth and ninth round en route to a ninth-round stoppage (0:54) down and out as referee Howard Foster waved the bout off with Warrington down.
At Avanti Palms Resort in Orlando, Florida, on Friday, February 12, 2021, 4-0 super middleweight prospect Michael Pierre of Orlando, Florida, got knocked down twice in the first round by 4-10-1 Gervonte Davis of Gulfport, Mississippi, and wound up losing a six-round decision. The journeyman Davis, a winner of only one bout in his last eleven tries, won five or six rounds on the three judges’ scorecards, and fought previously in July 2020, while Pierre was inactive for 15 months coming into this bout.
Also on Friday, At Notes Lounge in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, 8-0 heavyweight prospect Keith Rydell Mayes Jr. got knocked out in the third round (1:13) by 2-2 Jaden Booth of Knoxville, Tennessee. On the same night in PalaCosmelli, Livorno, Toscana, Italy, 16-3 super lightweight Giancarlo Bentivegna, inactive over a year, fought a six-round draw with 8-10-1 Venice journeyman Nestor Maradiaga, a winner of only one of his last eleven bouts. 10-0-1 Panama Super Bantamweight Gerardo Murillo, lost a six-round decision to 15-8 Angel Berrio of Berrugas, Columbia, at Gimnasio Fitnext, Planeta Rica, Columbia.
