Former World Super Welterweight Champ Miguel Castellini Dies of Coronavirus at 73

Buenos Aries, Argentina (October 29th, 2020)– From cutman Nelson Cuevas to referee Eddie Cotton, the professional boxing world continues to suffer losses during the COVID-19 Novel Coronavirus time period. While former world heavyweight champion turned politician Dr. Vitali Klitschko is currently recovering from the COVID-19 Novel Coronavirus in Ukraine, the boxing world has sadly sustained yet another championship loss.




Former World Boxing Association World Super Welterweight and lineal World Junior Middleweight champion Miguel Angel Castellini has tragically died in Buenos Aires, Argentina from the Coroanvirus at age 73, yet another vicitm of the ongoing pandemic. Castellini fought between 1965 and 1980, compiling a career pro boxing record of 74 wins, eight losses, and 12 draws, with 51 knockouts, at junior middleweight and middleweight between 151 and 157 pounds.




Castellini won the WBA Super Welterweight title and also briefly held the lineal world champion at 154 pounds between 1976 and 1977.  He won the WBA Super Welterweight World title by 15 round split decision over the then world champion Jose Duran of Madrid, Spain, in October 1976 in Duiran’s native Madrid, only to lose the WBA world title in his firsr defense to challenger Eddie Gazo in March 1977 by 15 round hometown decision in Gazo’s hometown of Managua, Nicaragua.  Castellini avenged the loss to Gazo by knocking out Gazo in the ninth round a rematch at Estadio Luna Park in Buenos Aires in September 1980 in his final fight.
