Iraqi Featherweight Prospect Basil Ali Nasser Rises in Dearborn Heights
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
Iraqi featherweight prospect Basil Ali Nasser is now 4-0 at only 22 years old. Born in Iraq, Nasser immigrated at four months old with his family to the United States. A native of Dearborn Heights, Michigan, Nasser won a six-round unanimous decision over veteran Charles Clark at the Ford Dearborn Community & Performing Arts Center in Dearborn, Michigan, on December 7, 2019. Young featherweight Nasser is already considered to be in the half all featherweights in the world. Against Clark, Naser demonstrated a strong right jab and a good defense. Clark tried jabs and counters, though he was mostly ineffective.
A large pro-Iraqi boxing fans crowd came out strong for Nasser at the Second2None Promotions card, literally bringing the house down after Nasser’s victory.
Nasser’s amateur pedigree is most impressive.
Nasser was a 2012 and 2013 Ringside silver medalist, and the 2013 Silver Gloves champion, 95 pounds open. In addition, Nasser was a Bronze medalist at the 2013 Junior Olympics, 95 pounds open. In 2014, Nasser was a National Golden Gloves semi-finalist and Bronze medalist, 106 pounds open. In 2015, Nasser was a National Golden Gloves semi-final and Bronze medalist, 114 pounds open.
Nasser, a highly technical boxer, gains his skill from his father, Basil Ali Nasser Sr., who was the number one ranked amateur in Iraq in 1987 at 122 pounds.
