Do or Die Heavyweight Bouts Coming Up
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
Do or die heavyweight bouts means the winner advances, and the loser could call it a career, or will be in a very downslide position in terms of the division. There are several interesting do or die heavyweight bouts coming up. It all depends on the boxing fan’s particular viewpoint as to who will win these interesting matchups.
Do or Die Heavyweight bout Number One: Andy Ruiz Jr. versus Anthony Joshua II
Fight Date: December 7, 2019, at Diriyah Arena, Diriyah, Saudi Arabia
Will the rematch in Saudi Arabia be simple a repeat of their first bout in Madison Square Garden or not? Will Joshua approach the bout differently? Will Ruiz be able to revise his game plan is Joshua manages to turn him and tries to tire him out? The winner of this bout will skyrocket in pay-per-view value, while the loser will be at a crossroads.
Do or Due Heavyweight Bout Number Two: Deontay Wilder versus Luis Ortiz II
Fight Date: November 23, 2019, at MGM Grand, Las Vegas, Nevada
Despite being in round five, and twice in round ten of their initial encounter, Ortiz only trailed 85-84 on the three scorecards at the time their first meeting was stopped in the tenth round. Ortiz, like Tyson Fury, can beat Wilder on points in the rematch-if he can survive Wilder’s power the second time around.
Do or Die Bout Heavyweight Number Three: Michael Hunter versus Alexander Povetkin
Fight Date: December 7, 2019, at Diriyah Arena, Diriyah, Saudi Arabia
At 31, Hunter is in his fighting prime, while at 40, Povetkin is hanging in there for one more shot at the world heavyweight title, perhaps at Wilder or Tyson Fury.
Do or Die Heavyweight Bout Number Four: Dereck Chisora versus David Price
Fight Date: October 26, 2019, at 02 Arena, Greenwich, United Kingdom
These two British favorites have 71 pro bouts between them. Unfortunately, Chisora has the more hardcore experience, and the chin of Price has not withstood the hard hitter heavyweights. Whoever wins stays alive, whoever loses can call it a day most probably.
Do or Die Heavyweight Bout Number Five: Sergei Kuzmin versus Zhilei Zhang
Fight Date: November 30, 2019, Casino de Monte Carlo Salle Medecin, Monte Carlo
20-0 Chinese southpaw Zhang has been out of the ring for a year. Kuzmin, fresh off a 12 round decision loss to Michael Hunter at Madison Square Garden in September 2019, believes he can beat Zhang anyway, as Zhang has not fought anybody of note on his record. Which fight is the contender, and which is the pretender? Fans will soon find out.
Do or Die Heavyweight bout Number Five: George Arias versus Gabriel Hernandez
Fight Date: October 24, 2019, Generoso Pope Athletic Complex, Brooklyn, New York
14-0 Dominican prospect Arias will face 10-0 California prospect Hernandez. Both prospects are relatively unknown, and the venue is a forgettable place. Whoever wins can try to rise.
Do or Die Heavyweight Bout Number Six: Kubrat Pulev versus Rydell Booker
Fight Date: November 9, 2019, Chukchansi Park, Fresno, California, Televised ESPN +
At age 38, Bulgaria’s Pulev, like Povetkin, is seeking a third shot at a world heavyweight title. In Marc 2019, Pulev incurred a bad cut against Bogdan Dinu in the third round, but came back to knock Dinu out in the seventh round. Booker, also age 38, has not won a 10 rounder since he decisioned King Arthur Williams in October 2003, and lost a 10 rounder to Jermaine Franklin in April 2019. Booker did stop limited journeyman Dieuly Aristilde in three rounds this June 2019. Pulev is guaranteed aa world title shot by Bob Arm’s top Rank if he wins this bout. This is the biggest bout of underdog Booker’s career.
