London, UK (April 30th, 2019)– Acclaimed boxing trainer Oliver Harrison, the British trainer of champions, best known for his work with world champions Amir Khan and Rocky Fielding, has passed away after a long illness at the age of 58.
Turning pro in 1991 as a super lightweight fighting out of Manchester, Harrison compiled a professional record of 6-4 with five knockouts. A fifth-round stoppage by Nigel Wenton in 1991 ended Harrison’s career as a boxer for good. Wenton went on to fight Giovanni Parisi for the WBO World Super Lightweight title in Italy in his final bout in 1997.
Harrison went on to a distinguished career as a Salford-based boxing trainer, providing the education of young professional fighters into training regimen and discipline, and developing the talent and working with such champions and contenders as Amir Khan, Rocky Fielding, Jamie Moore, Martin Murray and Denton Vassell. Harrison was best known for working with Amir Khan as his trainer for Khan’s first 17 pro bouts. Virgil Hunter currently has the legal contract to train Amir Khan, and it was Hunter who stopped Khan’s recent bout with WBO World Welterweight champion Terence Crawford after Khan had a rest period for a low blow and indicated he could not continue the world title bout. More recently, Harrison worked with Amir Khan’s younger brother, 7-0 bantamweight Haroon Khan.
