Nuts! Amir Khan Stopped by Terence Crawford on a Low Blow, Saturday RCM Boxing Roundup – Did Khan Quit?

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

New York, NY (April 21st, 2019)– In the Madison Square Garden main event on Saturday evening, April 21, 2019, on ESPN Pay-Per-View, Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford stopped British challenger Amir Khan in the sixth round on a controversial accidental low blow, which caused trainer Virgil Hunter to stop the bout during the mandatory five minutes resting period instead of letting the bout go to the cards when Khan indicated he could not continue. Crawford retained his World Boxing Organization World Welterweight title, and called out Errol Spence, the other recognized world welterweight champion.

Terence Crawford, 35-0 with 26 knockouts, Omaha, Nebraska, dropped Khan, 33-5 with 20 knockouts, Bolton, Lancashire, United Kingdom, in the first round for a flash knockdown. However, other than that, Khan appeared to win the first three rounds and perhaps the close fourth round.

Crawford was switching off from orthodox to a southpaw stance, but frequently got kit by the awkward hitting Khan. Crawford was loading up on the right hand, looking to land the bomb. Late in round four, Crawford switched to a tactical approach and began working to the body, a process he continued to win round five.

The bout ended 47 seconds in to round six, when Crawford landed a punch south of the border. Crawford claimed he punched Khan in the left leg, Khan claimed he got hit in the testicles. Whatever the case, Khan indicated to trainer Virgil Hunter he was physically unable to continue. Referee David Fields tried to get Khan to reengage, but Khan gave up. If Khan waited out the five minute rest period, the bout would have gone to the cards. Real Combat Media scored the bout 57-57 even included the shortened fifth round, based on giving Crawford only a 10-9 round in the first round. If the knockdown gave Crawford a 10-8 round on the judges’ scorecards, then the three scorecards would have benefited Crawford 58-56.

Promoter Bob Arum wailed the echo of the boxing establishment, stating “We want to fight Errol Spence. Everyone wants the fight! There is one guy stopping it, and that is (promoter) Al Haymon (of Premier Boxing Champions).”
