Boxing and MMA in Atlantic City, New Jersey: New 2018 Venues and News

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

Atlantic City, NJ (May 20, 2018)– On June 28, 2018, The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino will open on the site of what was once the Trump Taj Mahal. A group of investors representing Hard Rock International bought the Taj Mahal for 50 million dollars in March 2017 from investor bigshot Carl Icahn. It cost President Donald Trump 1.2 billion dollars to open the Taj Mahal in 1990, and with 500 million in new improvements, the new Hard Rock is bound to be much more than the run of the mill Hard Rock Café. The Mark Etess Arena has hosted major boxing events in the past, and will most certainly have boxing and MMA in its new future coming up soon.

Real Estate investor Bart Blatstein, who bought the Showboat Hotel and Casino north of the boardwalk, has operated Showboat as a non-gaming hotel since July 2016, and officially applied for a gaming license in February 2018, part of the revitalization of Atlantic City. Blatstein has been hosting professional boxing and MMA events in the interim on the vacant Showboat casino floor and in his ballrooms, using the vacant Noodle House Restaurant as the warmup area for boxers and MMA fighters for the moment.

Ocean Resort and Casino, the Former Revel and its towering hotel tower, is now owned by Integrated Properties of Denver, Colorado, and will become part of the Hyatt Hotel chain. A new hotel spa will feature 32 spa treatment rooms, a pool with sundeck and cabanas, and a large entertainment venue area for staging boxing, MMA and other sporting and music events.

A gaming company in Reno, Nevada, Eldorado Resorts, purchased the Tropicana for 1.85 billion, and has added the nearby Chelsea Tower to provide an additional 330 rooms, three new restaurants and two new pools. A pedestrian skybridge will connect The Chelsea to the Tropicana Havana Tower. This will add more excitement to an existing noteworthy boxing venue.
