JEFF HORN UPSETS MANNY PACQUIAO TO WIN WBO TITLE

Australian Fighters Get Every Decision, Pacquiao Out punches Horn 182-92, Loses

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

The only way to win in Australia is generally to knock out your outback opponent and keep or retain your title. Fighters only go to Australia if the money is on the table. Shane Mosley Jr., like his dad Shane Mosley, learned a hard lesson on Sunday, July 2, 2017, at Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane, Queensland, Australia.

16-0-1 Brisbane challenger Jeff Horn, whose only draw (against Rivan Cesaire in 2013) was avenged by TKO, landed two good accidental head butts, one each in rounds six and seven against Manny Pacquiao. CompuBox had Pacquiao landing 182 punches in the 12 round contest to Horn’s 92. That statistic alone meant Pacquiao was the winner by punches scored. Horn remained aggressive throughout, to his credit, and Pacquiao has a mandatory rematch clause. Horn was not the ‘Horn of Plenty’ (goes the expression), rather Manny Pacquiao was, and the point needs to be well taken.

Bob Arum’s 3-0 super bantamweight prospect Michael Conlan of Belfast, Northern Ireland was the sole fighter on the card to beat an Australian, 5-6-3 Jarrett Owen of Brisbane, when Owen’s corner threw in the towel in the third round. Owen has only one win over a fighter with a winning record in his last eight bouts, but Conlan still had to stop him to avoid a possible robbery in his opponent’s Australian hometown.

On December 26, 1908 in Sydney, Australia, Jack Johnson stopped Tommy Burns in the fourteen round of a widely acknowledged fixed fight stoppage to win the World Heavyweight title. Burns was losing badly at the time of the stoppage, though he claimed he could have continued. The late Detroit super lightweight DuJuan Johnson scored a ninth round knockout of Brian Janssen in Brisbane on June 1, 1984, his last fight before getting shot to death on the mean streets of Detroit. Super welterweight Joshua Clottey won a 12 round decision over Anthony Mundine in a WBA regional title fight in Newcastle on April 9, 2014. However, wins like these in Australia by foreign fighters are exceedingly rare.
