New York, NY (October 8th, 2015)–In the ten round main event of a six bout card at BB King Blues Club & Grill promoted by DiBella Entertainment and Alex Khanas Promotions in New York City on Wednesday evening, October 7, 2015, former New York Golden Gloves champion and current junior welterweight contender Luis Rosa returned and remained unbeaten with a brutal sixth round TKO of game but outmatched Ariel Vazquez. Shmuel Pagan also returned to action.
Cruz, now 11-0, five knockouts, Bronx, New York, coming off a ten month layoff due to hand surgery, dropped Vazquez twice in the first round with a speed right jab, then a counter right hook. Vazquez, now 12-10-2 with eight knockouts, Managua, Nicaragua, then changed from a ‘plan A’ offensive style bout to a ‘Plan B’ defensive strategy after the second knockdown and fought Cruz as a counterpuncher and hung tough. Vazquez went down a third time in the fourth round from a right hand and left hook combination.
In the sixth round, Vazquez, who moved well from side to side the entire bout, got caught standing in front of Cruz briefly in a corner. Cruz responded with a powerful right hand shot to the face of Vazquez which caused a sickened loud crack! Cruz broke the nose of Vazquez, who amazingly stayed on his feet and tried to battle on. Noted cut man and corner man Manuel ‘Diablo’ Calderone then signaled his New York State Athletic Commission corner official to have referee Danny Schiavone to stop the bout. “I had to stop it. He had not won a round and was badly hurt and bleed profusely (from the nose). He would have gotten badly hurt if the bout was allowed to continue. I didn’t want that as (beyond a certain point) you have to look out for the safety of your fighter.”
On the plus side, Cruz also got some good work in, boxed patiently, calm and cool throughout, and got excellent television exposure on Broadway Boxing in his first main event. It can safely be said from the opening bell the bout was never going the full ten. Vazquez, while no carbon copy of the late Alexis Arguello, gave a good accounting of himself, gamely traveling from Managua, Nicaragua to try to win this bout against all odds.
