Cornelius K9 Bundrage Fights For His Legacy and IBF Title Saturday Tonight
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
Manshantucket, Conn (September 11th, 2015)– International Boxing Federation World Super Welterweight champion Cornelius ‘K9’ Bundrage, age 42, will fight for his life and livelihood Saturday tonight, September 12, 2015, in the main event at Foxwoods Resort in Mashantucket, Connecticut, against 21-0 challenger Jermall Charlo. Bundrage, 34-5 with 29 knockouts, Detroit, Michigan, is one of the last great Detroit boxers from the glory days when the Kronk Gym ruled and Emanuel Steward was the trainer king, with main event fighters in seemingly every weight class of note, from Thomas Hearns to Duane Thomas. At age 25, Houston, Texas native Charlo has a rare identical twin who also boxes, and neither has not fought anybody of note. Charlo has youth on his side. Fighters like Bundrage, 42, and heavyweight Shannon Briggs, age 43, are older superior disciplined athletes hoping and looking for one last big fight.
Bundrage went pro in Detroit in September 1995 with a four round decision win over Lee Purdy. For a fighter who went pro in 1995, and over 20 years later holds a world title, Bundrage, like his friend Floyd Mayweather Jr., is a rare bird in the turnover world of boxing. A K9 is a domestic dog, guard dog or attack dog. If so, then Bundrage is a rare attacker of advanced age in a usually young man’s sport. At a short 5’6” and 154 pounds, Cornelius Bundrage is consistent. He started at 154 pounds in 1995, and 20 years later is still there. The 6’0” Charlo will be the 33rd taller opponent with a winning record Bundrage will have to take the fight to and get inside on, no big deal considering Bundrage took the IBF world title away from Mexican Carlos Molina by 12 round decision in Mexico in 2014. Inactivity is the greatest enemy of Bundrage, who must overcome the ring rust of an eleven month layoff to keep his IBF world title. Charlo fought three times within the past year.
If Bundrage wins over Charlo, he could try Floyd, Cotto, Saul Alvarez, Danny Jacobs, Erislandy Lara or even GGG. There is no shortage of big paydays and big name opponents. Likely Bundrage will stay at 154 pounds as he has been there his whole career and has never moved up, despite the risks and big financial reward possible at 160 pounds.
Charlo’s major issue is lack of quality opposition. This factor makes him the underdog. Cornelius K9 Bundrage is predicted to retain his IBF World Super Welterweight title by 12 round unanimous decision. The bout may be close, but the outcome will not be in doubt. The reliable K9 has already beaten the odds, and has at least one big win left in the tank. Bundrage could also stop Charlo earlier. The underdog Charlo remains untested thus far.
