On January 2, 1957, Sugar Ray Robinson lost a 15 round unanimous decision and his world middleweight title to Mormon boxer Gene Fullmer. Four months later, a very different Sugar Ray Robinson came in with a different battle strategy in the rematch, staying back and looking to counter whenever Gene Fullmer came inside.
On May 1, 1957, Sugar Ray Robinson landed a spectacular left hand on Fullmer coming in, knocking him out at 1:27 of the fifth round. Fullmer, having never been off his feet, struggled had no legs and couldnot beat the count. Watch the footage and you will agree.
Fullmer died on April 27, 2015, at age 83 in West Jordan, Utah, having long faded into obscurity. He would later draw in 15 rounds, and defeat Robinson is 15 rounds, before fighting Dick Tiger three times, drawing once and losing two, and retiring in 1963.
