Fight of the Century -REFUND

Editorial By George A. Dampeer, RCM Washington DC Boxing Correspondent

Las Vegas, NV (May 4th, 2015)– It started out with technical problems due to an overload of pay per view buys, for others it was having the fight viewed on multiple TVs in the home. The subtle problem slowing became a theme of disappointment for the night. Perhaps the most entertaining moment of the night was Lomachenko knocking out Gamalier Rodriguez in the 9th round. Santa Cruz did not put in much of a performance, nevertheless did what he was supposed to do over the car insurance salesman, Jose Cayetano.

The hype for the fight of the Century continued all the way up to the moment the two fighters touched gloves infront of referee Kenny Bayless. Jimmy Kimmel was granted to his wish to join Pacquaio on his ring walk as was mentioned on his late night show. Justin Bieber made his patented cameo with Floyd Mayweather, but also with the odd presence of the Burger King mascot. All of which followed after an interesting (is one way to describe) rendition of the national anthem by actor and singer Jamie Fox.

Finally it was “TIME!!” as Jimmy Lennon Jr would say. All those years of trash talk, deformation, contract maneuvering, and other ridiculous antics were over. It was finally happening, the best offensive fighter of or time against the best defensive fighter.

Perhaps it was the fault of our own, but the fight never produced the goods that everyone thought it would. It was a trademark strategic performance from Floyd Mayweather, one that most boxing fans who expecting this to be an exciting fight probably knew in the back of their mind all along. Pacqauio, like many Mayweather opponents had his best moments when Floyd was against the ropes but the moments were cut short with Floyd’s holding being used to get himself in better position. In other words Mayweather neutralized the combat of the fight, and that had a lot of people not happy.

Mayweather fans will say a number of things like, ‘this is boxing, to hit and not get hit’. Another pugilist of the sweet science motto, Mike Tyson had the same buyers remorse himself went he took to twitter: We waited 5 years for this? The next day he elaborated, “I was a killer, these guys are business men”. Oscar De La Hoya felt an apology was in order; “Sorry boxing fans”. He followed, “Call me old school but I like the fans getting their money’s worth by watching an action packed fight”. That is fair judgment when these big fights that come along every 20 to 30 years and what was supposed to be the biggest since Ali/ Frazier. Its not inconceivable for people to be upset of the lack of action whether you’re a fight fan, or just a casual watcher.

Who is to blame? We could say Mayweather for fact that his style is made to evaporate any violence and action in a boxing, we could say Pacquaio for his failure to get the shot needed for the inflammation in his shoulder to perform in the fight, but the grunt of the blaming honors shod be placed on us for placing our expectations above what was academic. To think Floyd was gonna come after Manny in a manner he’s never done before was a mistake, no matter how much bigger he was than Manny.

Yes, its a hit and don’t get hit sport, but it comes with a balance and if it doesn’t then the fighter should be ready for the repercussions.
