Nieves Decks Tejada, Wins Super Bantamweight War on New Legend Card
By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent
Queens, NY (March 30th, 2015)–In the co-main event at Resorts World Casino at Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens, New York, on Saturday evening, March 28, 2015, Antonio Nieves decked Saul Tejada for a flash knockdown in round six of an eight round super bantamweight war to notch a unanimous decision. The bout was closer than the scoring, with Tejada, red in the face, exchanging jab combinations and giving it their all. Tejada appeared to win the third and the fourth round with power shots to the side of Nieves’ body. However, Nieves was overall the busier of the two boxers, throwing a bit more often, and landing a bit more often. The rounds were close.
Result: Antonio Nieves Win 8 Saul Tejada, Super Bantamweights
Scoring: 79-72, 79-72, 79-72 Nieves. Referee: Steve Willis. Tejada was down in round six.
There is an old expression in boxing lore: never trust a card to the judges in a six round professional bout. For female boxers in states with two minute rounds, the need to win each round convincingly is an absolute must. In the other six round co-main event of a nine bout card promoted by New Legend Boxing at Resorts World Casino at Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens, New York, on Saturday evening, March 28, 2015, world ranked super lightweight Cindy ‘Checkmate’ Serrano of Brooklyn, New York, now 22-5-3 with 10 knockouts, had to settle for a split decision draw with FatumaKarika of Nairobi, Kenya, now 24-9-1 with 14 knockouts.
Cindy Serrano has the tools, but the game plan was not effective enough for the judges to find a clear winner. Zurika came forward with pressure throwing jabs, while Serrano was throwing jabs backing up on the move while landing a lot of jabs which bounced off Zarika’s upraised gloves. The rounds looked too even, too close to call, as neither boxer seemed to be doing enough to win any round outright. This confused the judges, who went in three different directions on the scorecards. Real Combat Media scored all of the rounds even, which matched the outcome of the bout. After the bout, Zurtika called out Cindy Serrano for an immediate 10 round rematch for a title.
Result: Cindy Serrano Draw 6 Fatuma Zarika, Super Lightweights
Scoring: 58-56 Cindy Serrano, 58-56 Zurika, 58-58 a draw.

Frank Castillo Draw 4 Lionel Charles, Junior Middleweights

David Sparks Win 4 Marcellus Yates, Cruiserweights
Shorter 1-0 Sparks got inside on taller 1-0 Yates. Bout fought in a telephone booth.
Ivan Baranchyk TKO 1 Damion Hill, Super Lightweights (1:19)
Mismatch. Belarus prospect Baranchyk landed power shots for a minute, then decked Hill.
Julian Sosa (Pro Debut) Win 4 Karim Muhammad, Super Lightweights
Mexican power hitter Sosa decked Muhammad in first, who courageously finished bout.
DimashNiyazov Win 4 Micah Branch, Super Featherweights
Unbeaten Kazakh prospect Niyazov torn up Branch with accurate jabs. Not a close bout.
Ariel Duran TKO 3 Raphael Luna, Welterweights (1:38)
Surprise! Duran, winless in last seven, bloodies and stops warrior Luna, winless in last ten.
A few bouts fell off this card, probably creating this opportunity bout for both journeymen.
Duran had not won since 2010. Luna had not won since 2009. Duran appeared to have trained hard for this bout, while Luna did not appear to have trained at all. Duran cut Luna across the bridge of the nose and the face, forcing the ring physician to stop contest. In this reporter’s view, Luna shout be retired by the New York State Athletic Commission.
