London, UK (June 1st, 2014)– Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KOs) defeated George Groves (19-2, 15 KOs) via an 8th round technical knockout in front of 80,000 at London’s Wembley Stadium. There was no controversy in this fight as there was in the first meeting between these on November of 2013. The previous fight was dominated by Groves (which included a first round knockdown) until Froch scored a strong combination to which the referee stopped the fight. In this fight, Groves utilized his right to give Froch a lot of trouble in the early rounds. Groves out boxed Froch and also utilized a combination a number of times to hurt Froch in the fourth and fifth rounds. Groves though started to lose steam, while Froch (never known to be a fast starter) picked up the pace. By the sixth and seventh rounds, Froch started to come out on top of their exchanges. In the eighth round Froch landed a right hand to drop Groves so hard his leg was bent backwards. The referee immediately stopped the fight in 2 minutes and 34 seconds to which Groves protested. This protest was rendered moot after Groves needed the physical support of the referee in order to gain balance while protesting the stoppage. Final fight statistics show Froch landed 96 of 349 punches (28 percent), while Groves landed 126 of 314 (40 percent). Froch who has appeared in his 13th straight world title fight retained his IBF Super Middleweight title and WBA Super World Super Middleweight title. In the undercard former Olympic Gold Medalist James Degale (19-1) fought previously undefeated Brandon Gonzales (17-1). The British fighter James Degale hurt the American Brandon Gonzales many times in the fight. This fight was eventually decided via a TKO in four rounds as part of a super middleweight title eliminator.
So what is next for Froch? A possible matchup with Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr. would be a great commercial fight in either the United States or the United Kingdom. This wouldn’t produce the best fighter as it is universally recognized that Andre Ward is the best fighter in that division. Froch manager stated a rematch of the defeat to Andre Ward will not come into fruition due to Wards lack of commercial appeal. This would be a smart strategic move in that Ward dominated Froch in their first fight with one broken hand and one good hand. James Degale believes that he is now ready for a title shot, to which Froch manager does not disagree.
