Shemuel Pagan Interview: A Light Welterweight Prospect On The Rise

By Robert Brizel, Head RCM Boxing Correspondent

In a Real Combat Media interview exclusive, six time New York City Golden Gloves champion and Olympic Games alternate Shemuel Pagan, who won his professional debut after training to go pro for two years, spoke with RCM after his first pro bout on the 50 Cent SMS Promotions and Lou DiBella Entertainment card ringside at Resorts New World Casino Aqueduct Raceway, on Monday, September 16, 2013. Pagan was the 2009 National Golden Gloves Second Place Silver Medalist in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Real Combat Media: “You knocked down your opponent, Calvin Smith, in the first and third rounds, and gave him quite a brutal beating, so much so he wound up in the hospital, and the boxing card was help for over an hour.”

Shemuel Pagan: “He was a tough kid. However, I’m in the hurt business. They should have stopped the bout earlier. I was literally punching my hand on skull.”

Real Combat Media: “You waited two years after ending your amateur career to turn pro. Why so long?”

Shemuel Pagan: “There’s a tremendous difference between the amateurs and the pros. Amateur punches, they are pitter patter. There’s a great deal of hard work involved in making the transition. I wanted to put on a good performance. I wanted to show I have power, but I can also think and box.”

Real Combat Media: “How did you take apart your opponent so rapidly in your debut?”

Shemuel Pagan: “I was hitting him with body shots in his gut. That kid (Calvin Smith) is a tough kid, I take my hat off to him.”

Real Combat Media: “At what point does the hurt business go too far?”

Shemuel Pagan: “Fighters taking a beating like that (which I gave to Smith), it’s not good. The doctor told me Smith had a light concussion, and he wasn’t thinking right.”

Real Combat Media: “Best of success with your career Shemuel, and Real Combat Media looks forward to covering your next bout later this year.”

Shemuel Pagan: “Thank you for taking an interest in my career!”
