Pacquiao Challenges Floyd, Needs To Sign With Mayweather Promotions To Get Floyd

By Robert Brizel, Head Real Combat Media Boxing Correspondent

Manny Pacquiao is over the hill, and has taken one punch too many. Pacquiao has been knocked out three times, and his last knockout lost to Juan Manuel Marquez was not funny. Pacman was out cold face first, worse than stiff corpse in a morgue icebox. This begs the question: should Pacquiao be resurrected from the dead for more beatings? According to Floyd Mayweather Jr., Manny Pacquiao will need to get out of his contract with Top Rank and sign with Mayweather Promotions if he ever wants to get the fight with Floyd. Unfortunately, Floyd has set this new precondition at present for Mayweather versus Pacquiao to happen at some point in the foreseeable future.

Pacquiao responded to Floyd’s unending chatter on Philippines television. “Mayweather is all talk but short on action! He talks and talks…..but you don’t use your mouth in the ring. I feel very good physically, and anticipate my fight with Brandon Rios to be the beginning of a new phase of my boxing career rather than the end.”

If Pacquiao beats Brandon ‘Bam Bam’ Rios, and Floyd beats Canelo Alvarez (there are no guarantees of that for sure), roadblocks to Mayweather versus Pacquiao such as contractual obligations, and HBO versus Showtime, and payday terms should be able to be overcome. Pacman will have to emerge against Rios as a much different fighter than he was against Juan Manuel Marquez. Despite Pacquiao’s claims Marquez simply landed a lucky punch, Marquez’ final knockout blow appeared to be anything but.

Juan Manuel Marquez versus Manny Pacquiao Round Six, Pacquiao Gets Knocked Out

Pacquiao versus Floyd Mayweather Jr. will soon become a dead horse. The public cannot wait forever. Perhaps Pacquiao’s heart is more into running for political office in the Philippines than boxing at this stage of the game, it’s hardtop say recisely. Putting Pacquiao into the ring with world class opposition like Brandon ‘Bam Bam’ Rios is a questionable idea after his last loss, sort of like throwing Pacman in with Edwin Valero if Valero was alive, or so it would appear after Pacman’s last loss.

Rios has a win over every fighter he has ever fought, a distinction Pacquiao cannot claim. At 31-1-1, Rios has 23 knockouts, which is one short of a 75% knockout ratio. Pacquiao has not scored a knockout or TKO stoppage in over five years, when he knocked out Ricky Hatton to retain the IBO world light welterweight title in May 2009, an indicator his once legendary punching prowess has fizzled. Pacquiao was looked for a knockout and redemption in his fourth confrontation with Marquez, a haphazard offensive approach, ultimately with a disastrous result seen by everyone, raising the obvious big questions now.

Pacquiao stated he will hang up his gloves if he loses to Brandon Rios on November 24, If his return against Rios is not to fight Floyd afterwards, What would be the further purpose of Pacquiao if he did beat Rios? To fight Danny Rivera, Austin Trout, Canelo Alvarez, Floyd Mayweather, Zab Judah, Amir Khan, Lucas Matthyse or Timothy Bradley?

Somehow Pacquiao no longer seems the candidate to get the big fight anymore. Promoters are promoters, and as such might try to steal a win for Pacquiao over Rios anyway. They put Manny in with Floyd after Floyd’s fight with Canelo, one way or another. If Floyd cannot beat Canelo, Showtime would still ove Floyd versus Pacman in Floyd’s next bout, which would be a bookies ‘Pacman Bamba’ as Floyd is likely to beat the on remnants of Pacquiao at this stage of the game, even if he does carry him the 12 round distance. Contrary to Floyd’s ‘opinion’, Floyd does not need to sign Pacquiao his promotional group to fight him. Such details are an expressive of the push me pull you diatribe between Floyd and Pacman.

The current version of Pacquiao might go the distance in his next bout with Brandon Rios. The last five fighters Rios has faced have a combined 169 wins, a number indicating the visit by Rios to the ring against Pacman is NOT a social call. It would be hard to watch Brandon Rios defeat Manny Pacquiao in Cotai Arena at the Venetian Resort in Macao.

Alexis Arguello versus Scott Walker, ESPN, January 1995, Arizona Charlie’s Las Vegas http://sosoboxing.com/boxing-video-watch-online/alexis-arguello-vs-scott-walker/

There could be a similarity between Pacquiao versus Rios, and the late Alexis Arguello’s final bout with the late Scott ‘The Pink Cat’ Walker in 1995. When Arguello stepped into the ring for the final time, Alexis was a shell of his former self. Speed, youth and timing defeated age and experience, partially due to substance abuse. It is a cruel lesson Manny Pacquiao will soon have to face. Arguello was 42 years old in his last ten rounder. But it was not really Arguello. In comparison, Pacquiao is now 34 years old. Pacman is no longer his previously focused self. Like Arguello, Manny has to experience being beaten by a younger, better, stronger boxer before understanding why his gloves should be hung up. Scott Walker’s legs were good. He outboxed Alexis Arguello from the outside, as Arguello’s self-destruction for years left his shell unable to match Walker’s punch count all night.

Pacquiao stated yesterday in his challenge to Floyd “Let’s fight!” Well said, and it all sounds good. However, Pacquiao fans may not like seeing the ultimate end for Pacquiao if it does come in one his upcoming bouts.

All good things-even hero worship-must come to an end. The damage done by Juan Manuel Marquez to Manny Pacquiao in their fourth confrontation last year is too much for Manny Pacquiao to overcome. That’s the real reason Floyd Mayweather Jr. now considers Manny Pacquiao a future available juicy target in the ring, even if Floyd’s jive talk won’t admit the real truth. Money may be on the boxing table, even if one or both of the fighters are not really able. But the end doesn’t justify the means if somebody gets hurt, which is my view.
