Anthony Juice Young Interview: Atlantic City’s Rising Welterweight Prospect

By Robert Brizel, Real Combat Media Correspondent

Atlantic City, NJ (April 21st, 2013)– Anthony ‘Juice’ Young is a 7-0 welterweight out of Atlantic City, New Jersey, co-promoted by Greg Cohen Promotions and GH3 Promotions. Young was recently seen on the untelevised undercard of ESPN2’s ESPN Friday Night Fight card at the Tropicana Hotel in his native Atlantic City, New Jersey, scoring a come from behind

fourth round stoppage of Rafael Montalvo in the fourth round after losing the first three rounds on points and being unable to win the bout on the cards.

Listening carefully to his trainer in his corner between rounds, ‘Juice’ Young displayed depth and intelligence in changing his game plan midstream, no longer fighting Montalvo’s fight, and finishing him when he had Montalvo seriously hurt.

Real Combat Media interviewed Juice Young at ringside before the start of the televised ESPN2 World Boxing Association interim Featherweight World championship bout between Javier Santana and challenger Miguel Zamudio.

Real Combat Media: “You took a fight with Rafael Montalvo, who holds wins over regarded 6-1-1 DeCarlo Perez (who subsequently beat Shamone Alvarez) and 2-0 Vinny O’Brien. Was it a bit risky to take such a fight so early in your career?”

Juice Young:Rafael Montalvo’s 2-3 record coming in against me was deceiving.”

Real Combat Media: “Montalvo knocked out Atlantic   City welterweight prospect DeCarlo Perez at Bally’s in February 2012. Real Combat Media covered the bout.”

Juice Young: “I was actually at the Montalvo versus Perez fight at Bally’s, so I knew what style of puncher he is.”

Real Combat Media: “What did you know about Montalvo before the bout?”

Juice Young: ” I saw he took fighters against a number of unbeaten fighters: Jerome Rodriguez, Jeremy Irons and Vinny O’Brien, and also the DeCarlo Perez fight. His decision losses were perhaps robberies. Montalvo could have been 4-0 against those fighters.”

Real Combat Media: “So you regarded Montalvo as a dangerous opponent?”

Juice Young: “He was dangerous. He was able to knock off another contender in Atlantic City and get paid for it. So I prepared for him like he was a 5-0 or 4-1 fighter. Montalvo is a brawler.”

Real Combat Media: “You lost the first three rounds on points to Montalvo, a shorter fighter who outboxed you on the inside. He isn’t a better fighter than you, so what happened?”

Juice Young: “I felt like I was trying to impose my will too much, and I was playing into his game plan.”

Real Combat Media: “You got some good corner advice and you listened. Explain the turnaround before the fourth round of your bout.”

Juice Young: “After the third round, my trainer, Ray McCline, told me ‘Juice, your legs are your goal. use your jab more.’ I came out in the fourth round, and established my jab early. I hit Montalvo with a feint. I went to Montalvo’s body with punches, then came over the top with an overhand right. Once I hurt Montalvo, I was not going to let him off the hook. I put my foot on the gas pedal and finished (Montalvo on the ropes) the fight.”

Real Combat Media: “Juice, when will you step up from six to eight round bouts?”

Juice Young: “I plan to fight three or four more of six round bouts. I did not have 100 amateur bouts. I only had 28 amateur bouts. I’m learning on the job. I’m taking my time. I’m 25 years old.”

Real Combat Media: ” What plans do you have next?”

Juice Young: “I’ll fight whoever Greg Cohen Promotions and GH3 Promotions put in front of me. The promoters are partners I guess. fighters like Rafael Montalvo are what I need to build up to eight rounders (eight round status).”

Real Combat Media: “Thank you, Juice Young, and all the best of success with your career in the near future. Real Combat Media will be watching your progress and rise.”
