Silver Boy Rodriguez is Back in The Mix
By Robert Brizel, Real Combat Media Correspondent
New York, NY (February 2, 2013)–New York City southpaw Jose Angel ‘Silver Boy’ remains of the most talented middleweight boxers in the business. Rumor has it he was inactive for 27 months because nobody wanted to fight him after he won the vacant International Boxing Federation North American Middleweight boxing title.
In the preliminary bout to the main event at the Hilton Garden Inn Staten Island promoted by Greg Cohen Promotions, Rodriguez won an impressive eight round points decision over Denis Douglin, another southpaw, in which ‘Silver Boy’ demonstrated the technical skills which made him famous. At age 33, he can still get back into the middleweight mix of contenders.
Rodriguez, now 17-2-1 with two knockouts, went to work right away, perhaps losing a round or two in the first three trying to break Douglin down by penetrating his defenses and outworking him. By the fourth round, Rodriguez was coming forward with pressure and outboxing Douglin all the way. Rodriguez, on advice of his corner, let his hands go and was very busy, forcing Douglin to hold for most of the last five rounds in close without allowing him room for counter opportunities.
Douglin appeared tentative to fight back when ‘Silver Boy’ began to outwork him. Douglin, taken out of his game plan, needed to jab from the outside, switch to an orthodox stance or try something. Unwilling or unable to let his hands go as his corner wanted him to, Douglin ate a lot of leather. It was not pretty to watch ‘Silver Boy’ make Douglin eat a lot of leather. Douglin, now 14-3, 8 knockouts, Marlboro, New Jersey, banked on Rodriguez being rusty and for a round or two it was somewhat so. Once Rodriguez warmed up, Douglin’s plan of attack was reduced to a game of survival. While Douglin was never in trouble, he was not scoring any points with the judges, and had the faintest possibility of winning the later rounds.
Known as ‘Momma’s Boy’, Douglin is apparently the only active fighter trained by his mother. This reporter’s suggestion to Havoc Boxing is that the equation does not work, and Douglin needs to start over again from square one with a new trainer, not his mother. Having lost three of his last five fights, the evidence indicates Douglin needs a new trainer and the time is now. Douglin, a former National Golden Gloves middleweight champion, has the heart but not the tutelage a world class trainer provides. At 24, Douglin needs to make some serious changes in camp or his career will be over. Normally a light middleweight, Douglin went up to middleweight to fight Rodriguez, another key mistake as he could not keep up with Rodriguez and lost his effectiveness in the higher weight class. Rodriguez is an established 12 round fighter. Even with his layoff, Rodriguez is a class above Douglin, and proved it on Staten Island. Even so, Rodriguez will still have problems getting fights.
Result: Jose Angel Rodriguez Win 8 Denis Douglin, Middleweights
Scoring: 79-73, 78-74, 78-74 Douglin. Referee; Danny Schiavone
