The Pepsi Center in Denver has seen many great MMA fights, but tonight could prove to be the best fight ever in Colorado. With their last fight already being considered a contender for Fight of the Year, Benson “Smooth” Henderson (16-2) and Frankie “The Answer” Edgar (14-2-1) look to step it up kick it up even higher than before.
Benson is making his first defense against a familiar opponent. After winning a very controversial fight against Frankie to win the belt, many people called for an immediate rematch against Edgar. While he had no problem with the immediate rematch, it left a huge chip on his shoulder. Henderson wants to prove to every fan that he deserves this title and will look to make this fight as one-sided as possible.
Frankie Edgar should change his nickname to “The Rematch” because out of his last five matches, three were rematches and they were all for the title. However, the rematch tonight feels different. This is the first time where people felt Edgar didn’t deserve the rematch and to be completely fair, Edgar looked like he was beaten up with a baseball bat while Benson looked like he never even got punched. Regardless, Edgar has another shot to prove that he is the best LW in the UFC and another shot to correct his record.
My prediction:
Benson Henderson has an large advantage over Frankie in one aspect of this fight: Being much bigger and stronger. Not saying the Frankie hasn’t fought bigger guys (ex. Gray Maynard) but Benson is a WW fighting at LW. Not only that, but his striking looked devastating while Edgar never landed any punches with true power. Unless Edgar is able to effectively dodge Henderson’s strikes this time around and use his counters, I have to go with Benson Henderson by UD.
Also on this card, Donald Cerrone and Melvin Guillard go to war in what could be the Fight of the Night. Also, Jake Shields makes his MW debut in the UFC against Ed Herman. See below for the full card.
