LUCAS MATTHYSSE VS. HUMBERTO SOTO PREVIEW: WHO DO YOU HAVE WINNING?
By: Jai Singh
This Saturday (June 23rd), former multiple time world champion Humberto Soto (59-7-2, 34 KO’s) seeks his 60th victory in the professional ranks as he takes on Argentinian power-puncher Lucas Matthysse (30-2, 28 KO’s) in a mouthwatering fight for hardcore boxing fans at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif.
Soto, who hails from Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico is set to do battle with Matthysse on the Victor Ortiz vs. Josesito Lopez undercard for the vacant WBC Continental Americas 140lb championship & a potential world title shot.
World rated contender, Lucas Matthysse whose monstrous power led him to obliterated former world champion DeMarcus Corley in a fight in Argentina, flooring him twice in the fifth round, once in the sixth, three times in the seventh and three times in the eighth (before the referee finally halted the slaughter) says he is looking to make a huge statement this weekend after being on the losing end of two highly controversial decisions against the likes of Devon Alexander & Zab Judah.
“I expect to win by KO. I think I was robbed against Zab Judah and Devon Alexander in the United States, so expect a KO. I don’t want it going to the judges on Saturday, so expect a good fight. I respect Soto because he was a three-time world champion.
He comes from lighter divisions and my strength will help me win. I trained in Junin, Buenos Aires, for two months. I sparred with nine sparring partners. I am in the best shape of my life” said Matthysse confidently at the open workout this past Wednesday.
Soto on the other hand believes his supposed superior game plan and skills will aid him to victory:
“I know the winner on Saturday will be the fans because Mathysse is a quality fighter and I am prepared for him,” he said during his turn at the podium at Thursday’s press conference.
“Come to this fight. It’s going to be a great fight.”
Soto (58-7-2, 34 KOs), who has held WBC titles at featherweight (interim), junior lightweight and lightweight, says he feels strong fighting at 140 pounds but won’t rely on brute strength to see him through against Matthysse.
“I’m going to fight the way my corner wants me to fight, which intelligently,” Soto said through Salazar. “I’m going to box and counter punch when I seen openings.
“But if I see that I need to do more during the fight, if I need to stand my ground, I’ll do what I need to do.”
The stakes are high for both fighters, as both are desperate for a breakthrough career defining victory and performance to ascend to the next level in the sport.
Also on hand at Thursdays press conference was none other than Stephen Espinoza (Executive Vice President & General Manager of SHOWTIME Sports) who didn’t waste any time in letting everyone know his thoughts:
“SHOWTIME has a long history of bringing boxing fans the best matchups, the most exciting, action- packed fights and this is a perfect example”.
“We have Humberto Soto and Lucas Matthysse (on the undercard), two of the most underrated and underappreciated fighters in the sport, (both) knockout artists. Do not get a drink; do not go to the bathroom during that fight. It will be a thriller all the way through. For those of you who watch boxing, we had a great fight in March between Orlando Salido and Juan Manuel Lopez and it is a candidate for Fight of the Year. I actually think the Fight of the Year might be Matthysse vs. Soto. That’s how interested I am in this fight.”
In the past when Soto has combined his superb boxing and slugging against a strong, determined, young fighter, the results have been electrifying as his highly competitive unanimous decision victory over Urbano Antillon in 2010 proved.
The fight immediately precedes the welterweight clash between Victor Ortiz and Josesito Lopez.
