UFC on Fox 3: Recap

By MMA Writer: Mike Alexander

After two disappointing Fox cards, The UFC finally put on an entertaining night of fights for Fox viewers.

First fight on the Fox card saw Pat Barry take on Lavar Johnson in a fight that would determine the KO of the Night winner. Barry started the fight strong with crisp leg kicks. When Johnson started to bully Barry with his size, Barry did the unexpected by taking down Johnson and almost submitting Johnson with a keylock. Johnson was able to escape however, and KO Barry with a vicious flurry of uppercuts and hooks.

Alan Belcher, the perennial odd man out in the MW division, took on Heel-hook master Rousimar Palhares. To quote one of my friends, “Belcher stepped inside the lion’s cage and ate the lion!” Palhares was able to take Belcher down early on, but Belcher showed he was more than willing to roll with the master. Attacking immediately, Belcher attempted a Twister but failed to secure it. That set up Palhares to take Belcher’s foot and attempt a heel hook. Belcher was then able to escape and land some good strikes from on top, winning the bout by TKO.

Johny Hendricks then took on Josh Koscheck in a razor thin split decision. For three rounds, Hendricks and Koscheck put on a back and forth brawl. Of course, you can’t have a Koscheck fight without an eye poke, but Hendricks was able to work past it, and sealed the deal by being the better striker. With the split decision victory, Hendricks should see himself matched against a guy like Rory McDonald for a #1 contender match up.

The main event of the night saw a night of firsts: The first exciting main event in Fox’s history, the first stoppage in Jim Miller’s career, and Nate Diaz earning the #1 contender title. Miller tried to set the pace at the beginning, but Diaz was able to stay in control and pick Miller apart with his boxing. More of that came in the second, with Diaz rattling Miller just after the half way mark. Diaz was then able to secure a tight guillotine choke and win the Submission of the Night bonus. With this win, Diaz gets to fight the winner of the upcoming Henderson/Edgar match-up.
