UFC on FX 2: Recap

By: MMA Writer Mike Alexander

If there is one thing the UFC knows how to do, it’s putting on fantastic free cards. The UFC made it’s way back to Australia yesterday night and put on a good show for all the Aussies. This card is a historic one because it marked the beginning of the Flyweight division as two match ups attempted to set up a championship fight later this year. Not only that, but a welterweight slug fest ended the night on a bang.

In the first flyweight match up, former bantamweight contender Joseph Benavidez took on UFC newcomer Yasuhiro Urushitani. In a quick bout, Benavidez dominated Urushitani for the get go and almost choked him out in the first round before the horn sounded. Wasting little time, he dropped and finished Urushitani by TKO in just 11 seconds of the second round.

In the second flyweight fight, #1 ranked flyweight Ian McCall took on another top bantamweight contender, Demetrious Johnson, in one of the most controversial fights in UFC history. The first two rounds were very even, until the third where McCall absolutely dominated Johnson and controlled the round handily. But the judges scored the fight 29-28 split decision for Johnson. The problem was, the one of the judges actually scored the fight in favor of McCall, so the scorecard read 29-28, 28-29, and 28-28, making the fight officially a split draw. Normally, this would have been sent to an overtime round, but the confusion has led to this fight being rescheduled for April.

In the final fight of the night, Thiago Alves took Martin Kampmann to the edge, dominating the fight for two and a half rounds, but he made a simple mistake by trying to take Kampmann down when he was dominating the stand up game, and got his neck caught in a guillotine choke. Kampmann has now won two in a row, so  expect him to receive a match-up with a title contender or a rematch with Jake Shields.
