Houston, TX (February 13th, 2022)– World Boxing Council World Middleweight champion Jermall “Hit Man” Charlo, 32-0 with 22 knockouts, Houston, Texas, winner of six consecutive middleweight world title bouts, has been arrested again, this time for felony assault of a household or family member, on Friday, February 11, 2022, in Texas.
A Fort Bend Texas County Jail official released information Charlo, 31, was booked at around 1:30 P.M. Central Standard Time, after a warrant for his arrest was issued by the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office. According to courthouse records, Charlo was booked for felony assault of a family/household member due a previous conviction. Jermall Charlo’s release bond was set at ten thousand dollars bail money. Records indicate Charlo remains in police custody.
Charlo’s arrest is related to an alleged September 21, 2021 incident in which he was accused of punching or grabbing a man, who was injured in the alleged altercation. Court documents state the man was a member of Charlo’s family or household. Charlo’s latest arrest is the second time Charlo he has been arrested in the six months. Charlo was previously taken into custody in San Antonio, Texas in August 2021 being accused of stealing from a waitress during a dispute at a bar. In that case, the case was officially dismissed in February 2021, just before Charlo’s latest arrest, due to insufficient evidence.
Charlo attorney Kent Schaffer claims his client is innocent, is the victim of a shakedown for money within his own family, and stated a possible motive. Mr. Schaeffer told news source TMZ a relative of Charlo went to the police and said Jermall struck him in September 2021 in Fort Bend. Despite the fact plenty of witnesses were present (in the household), no investigation was done (before Jermall’s latest arrest). This (allegation and subsequent arrest) is an attempt to shake Jermall down for money, and it’s not going to happen. If these charges are not dismissed, Jermall will be acquitted (at trial).”
Jermall Charlo is rapidly becoming the next Adrien Broner when it comes to getting into trouble. Charlo’s troubles are the most publicized of any boxer from Texas since the late junior middleweight Antonio AKA Tony “El Torito” Ayala Jr., whose ongoing problems with the law made news in San Antonio, Texas, between his amateur career in the 1970’s, and throughout his professional career which followed, until his untimely death in 2005.
