Phoenix, Arizona (December 18th, 2019)– The off again, on again 12 round bout between super middleweights Daniel Jacobs versus Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is now on again, and it is going to take place, televised on DAZN, on Friday, December 20, 2019, at Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Arizona. This reporter favors Jacobs to win by majority decision in a close technically fought 12 rounder.

Jacobs, age 32, 35-3 with 29 knockouts, Brooklyn, New York, a former WBA and IBF World Middleweight champion, challenged unsuccessfully is titular unification bouts against Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin in 2019 and Saul Alvarez in 2019, and is now moving in weight class. Chavez, age 33, a big draw due to his father’s (Julio Cesar Chavez Sr.) fame in Mexico and worldwide, 61-3-1 with 33 knockouts, Culican, Sinaloa, Mexico, a former WBC World Middleweight and WBC Continental Americas Super Middleweight champion, who has also lost by decision to Saul Alvarez as Jacobs has, has experience fighting in the middleweight, spur middleweight and light heavyweight divisions.

According to ESPN MX, a Nevada State judge has cleared Chavez to fight in the United States by lifting the temporary suspension imposed by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) and Commissioner Bob Bennett for failing to take a VADA drug test. The entire situation will be rereviewed by the NSAC and the Nevada courts at a later date to be determined. In this case, Chavez was only accused of not taking the requested test.

On the undercard, the Jacobs backup opponent in the event Chavez had to pull out, middleweight veteran Gabriel Rosado, 24-12-1 with 14 knockouts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, will still be available if something happens with Jacobs again, and is scheduled to fight last-minute southpaw opponent Humberto Gutierrez ‘Cachorrito Bachillo’ Ochoa,33-8-2 with 22 knockouts, Tijuana, Mexico, in a 10 rounder. Ochoa has fought his way through every division from super featherweight to light heavyweight. Former WBC World Flyweight champion Julio Cesar Martinez Aguilar, 14-1 with 11 knockouts, Mexico City, Mexico, will fight for the vacant WBC World Flyweight title again Cristofer Rosales, 29-4 with 20 knockouts, Managua, Nicaragua, in the DAZN main event. Aguilar’s last WBC title bout with Charlie Edwards in August 2019, a rematch of the WBC bout in which he originally lost the title to Edwards, originally a third-round knockout win, was later changed to No Contest as Edwards was hit by Edwards, while down on one knee. The winner of this bout will probably have to fight ex-champ Edwards due to the No Contest. Former WBO World Super Lightweight champion Maurice Hooker and former WBO World Super Welterweight champion Liam Smith are on the undercard.
